We use Skype at work. Apart from the cost of the phone, it is totally free if both parties have computer connections. Quality does vary - but mostly it's fine. We speak to China (and Belgium :) )daily - no problems really :)

You can buy the phones from the Internet and the software is free

I've spoken to my nephew in Canada on my sister-in-laws Skype and it was great, just as good quality as UK phone chatting.

Just talking to my hubby about this and he reminded me, ( slightly off topic) about 20 years ago when my boys were young i bought them a pair of cheap £19-99p walkie talkies for xmas, i ended up talking to people allover the place, some in Scotland ( im in Essex), sussex, someone on a motorway, the lady next door but one in her house, somehow i picked up the airwaves, there, you really wanted to know that didnt you!

If you look at dear Mr Lewis's Moneysavingexpert website he will tell you not to bother with Tesco Internet Phones:
Ignore Tesco's 'internet phone ad': the normal phone is massively cheaper!
Tesco's launched a multi-million ad-campaign for its new internet phone (calls from a computer to a normal phone). Yet other internet phones are much cheaper, and none are cheaper than the top normal phone providers anyway. It charges 2p/min to call a landline, yet you can get it for 4p/call. It charges 10p/min to call mobiles, yet they're available for 4p/min. Don't touch it with a barge pole!

Jackyjat thanks very much but if you read my post properly its to keep in contact with a friend who will be moving to the USA and seeing as calls to people using tesco to tesco phones are free then what you just said is wasted on me.

I did read your initial post correctly and understand that you wish to call your friend in USA. However, it may eventually save you money if you read the article quoted above.
I did not mean to offend

::, simply suggest that all is not what it seems.

No your not offending unless i've missed something as i thought tesco to tesco phone was free?
I'm not intending to use the phone for anything else (even tho the pay as you go seems quite handy) only to keep in touch with her.

Hi we have one and so does my daughter they are free to other tesco internet phones and they are good some times we get a bit of an echo but apart from that they are fine calls to 0845 numbers are slightly cheaper than on the house line

im not sure if this is totally correct, but 2 members of my family are on TalkTalk & they say that they get all local , national & international calls plus line rental , plus broadband internet all for only £20.99 a month !!! must look into that one :) So with Skype too , could make a pretty cheap package !

My daughter and her boyfriend got theirs last weekend, his father was getting fed up with the BT phone bill and neither family being able to use home phone, so far it has worked very well for them and is free for them to call up each other,

the downside of having boyfriends living 89 miles away, having to phone or use MSN! :)

Bit late here but we use Skype at work to talk to a group in Israel (they didn't want to pay for the international calls). Instead of a phone we use a Plantronics USB headset I bought to do voice overs on some movies. Works great, very comfortable and good quality sound.
