For some reason my garden and house are covered in spiders.  They seem to be massive and of all different colours!.  My hanging baskets are covered in spiders webs and no sooner do you clean them up a bit there covered again.  Same as in the house I dust around, go to bed and have cobwebs everywhere!  Is there anything I can get to get rid of them or seriously reduce there numbers.  We have never had this problem before its unreal!

If there is anything to get rid of them I would like to know too.
We've got the same problem here.

Spiders attacks!!!

Flip! Sounds like a horror movie. where in the country are you? I'm very arachnophobic. I spray all the window frames and door frames with ant and crawling insect spray (from B&Q) every week to try and keep them out. I don't get many spiders in the house - maybe one a fortnight which my neighbour or brother have to come and remove :)

chestnuts repel spiders and i have been told that you can now purchase chestnut oil for spraying around door and windows and any other noo or crannie that i spider might come in through

Nothing gets past my black cat sorcha, ace huntress, but very horrible to watch.
- By dollface Date 12.07.06 21:02 UTC
They sure keep the masquito population down :D

Eeeeeeeeew that would just freak me out, scared of them spiders eeeeeeeeew
- By fifi [gb] Date 12.07.06 21:19 UTC
They freak me out too, but have just seen the most wonderful gadget that I think the person got from Lakeland.  It looks like a child plastic lightsaver/sword thingy (technical term) but its actually like a very small vacum cleaner which sucks spider/crawly things up without hurting them then you can release them outside.  i think I need to find myself a Lakeland catalogue!! :D
- By dollface Date 13.07.06 00:08 UTC
I think I know exactly what you are talking about, I bought one for my son last year for x-mas for like $4.99 at Zellers. Its a Bug Vacuum - orange handle, clear middle and green front vacuum part.... My son loves it lol Now I see them for like $12.99 - $15.00 at Walmart

I actually shuddered then, reading that post!

I HATE spiders!

One was on my top yesterday (yes ok, it was no bigger than 5p, but still, it was on ME!)

And where was i? On the beach of all places!! How it got there il never know, but all the people nearby got some entertainment for the afternoon with the performance i made! LOL!

I know exactly what you mean. Every summer my doors and windows are the homes of spiders! There is a spider in every crease possible. Even around the corners of windows, lining on doors -everywhere! Our house backs onto a field so I can only imagine they are there and then coming to us in the summer. Hate spiders!! Last year I made the OH clean the whites of the windows to get rid of the spiders and all I saw was him jumping off the ladders and whacking something with the cloth - made me laugh whilst I was doing the ironing!! Might have to get some of that chestnut stuff!!

in bed last night reading when I had this tickly sensation on my foot thought at first one of the dogs had picked a flea up and it had got into our bed so thought I,d better investigate, so I pulled back the sheet and it was a huge spider crawling on my foot:eek:
luckily they don,t bother me in the slightest but hubbys not too keen on them so its a good job he was downstairs watching telly.
- By dollface Date 13.07.06 16:25 UTC
We were at the firewoks on the first of July and I seen this thing move and boy did I jump and screem  everyone was looking at me. Turned out to be nothing :D I felt like a fool, hubby, kids and friends were laughing at me.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 15.07.06 17:07 UTC
How dare those spiders go out sunbathing in the middle of the day :d :d  I don't like spiders either but they do keep the fly population down, now they do drive me mad.

Saved a butterfly the other day from a Spiders web, but the spider had ate one of it's legs, unfortunately the poor thing didn't last long as it was unable to get it's balance, I was sooooo sad for it :d
- By Carrington Date 14.07.06 07:21 UTC
I sympathise, our house was built on a field and we are swamped with the little critters at certain times of the year, dogs and cats usually have spider breakfast, lunch and dinner  one thing to remember though, if there are loads of spiders there must be loads of food for them, so imagine the infestations of other more nasty insects without them, so they sure serve their purpose.
- By Alexanders [gb] Date 14.07.06 16:39 UTC
Oh Spellmaker if that had been me I think I would have thrown up!!!  I saw a spider walking across my bedroom wall last night - not too big thankfully - and so tried to get it out with a fluffy mop.  It ran off and I spent half the night with one eye open waiting for it to come back - shudder.  Hope I don't see it again tonight.

Where did those huge spiders - the ones with a face - suddenly come from a few years ago.
I remember tidying up the cushions one night, seeing what I though was a tuft of fur off our black dog, and as I reached to remove it, it turned around and looked at me! I was so shocked, I could actually see it's face it was so big! I had to wake my husband up to come and get it - he was quite indignant until he saw it!
We've seen quite a few each year since - they all have that big body and long legs!  They certainly can't cross the room without you noticing from the corner of your eye!
- By ashlee [gb] Date 15.07.06 14:42 UTC
Trisha, know what you mean! we had one two years ago,I have never seen a spider that big, but didnt look for a face didnt get that close!it was on our bathroom wall, hubby chucked it out,but not sure if the same one, came back in to be put to death without trial by my cat.
I was so freaked out because we have a grapevine that started to grow over the kitchen roof,I had the vine moved to the other end of the garden as I am sure this spider was living in it.
My horrid neighbour said she had a huge spider around about the same time, but killed it by pouring bleach over it,terrible,Im scared stupid but would never do that.
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 15.07.06 15:22 UTC
Thompson1 - You probably notice cobwebs more after dusting because they are so good at trapping dust ;)  When I used to own a horse I always left cobwebs in the stable because they are very efficient at dust catching :D
Heres a suggestion, instead of wanting to get rid of them why dont you research all the different types that you see and try to understand the life and natural history of them.  They are rather interesting I can tell you ;)  I saw a lovely leggy female carrying her egg sac in her jaws the other day and was truly fascinated by it - watched for ages :D
Great little things spiders - I find it weird that so many people want them gotten rid of or worse DEAD!!  They play a very important role in your garden and home ecosystem ;)

spiders dont bother me too much, but i cant bring myself to touch them, but its cobwebs i really cant stand the feel of them makes me feel sick and weak at the knees. if i see i spider in doors before the dogs do i use a glass and piece of paper to get rid of it, if the dogs see it first then im afraid its a gonner. As for spiders with faces, i remember when i was still in school,  one evening i saw a spider running across the floor i couldnt be bothered to go downstairs (once im in mt bed thats it i dont get out til mornig :) ) and all i had to hand was an empty sweet tube, the ones you get at christmas and easter, so i caught this spider in the tube and put the lid on, as it was a large tube i thought it would be ok til morning, inthe end i relented and let the spider out, i couldnt take any more of the banging on the lid where it was trying to get out :D it was like chinese water torture

I don't mind them if they are outside but away from my house, I know they eat all the bugs we really don't like like them masquito's and flies and stuff, but still eeeeeeeeeeeew  When I was little I use to through bugs into their webs and watch them spin it up, that was pretty fascinating. I also use to pull the legs off daddy longlegs  I know poor spider, and to this day now I will not even hold one. Hubby brought a spider home and I was telling him it was a daddy long legs (which really are NOT spider at all) and I looked it up on the net to prove it was a Daddy long legs and this one looked like a grain of rice with legs and to scare people away it would shake.
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 17.07.06 18:46 UTC
Daddy long legs is a common name used for crane flies and/or harvestmen 'spiders' - which as you mention are not really spiders at all, but are still arachnids (scientific name Phalangium opilio :D)  They are not technically spiders because their 'body' is not split like a spiders  it is one section (as opposed to a carapace and opithisoma)
That said - there is another spider known as a daddy long legs that lives in most houses and sheds and bounce's up and down when disturbed...That one is pholcus phalangioides and is a spider because its body is in 2 parts.  :D
Yes I am a geek

LOL :D

Anyone ever tell you that you need to get out more Rozzer?? :P
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 18.07.06 16:06 UTC
:D - I have moved on from my spider days :D  Used to work in a zoo as an entomologist, even did a few tv jobs...Sounds kinda glam when I put it that way but the money was beyond poor and the hours were long.
I have moved on and every now and then I get out :D :D
- By ShaynLola Date 18.07.06 16:31 UTC
Doesn't sound in the least bit glam to me (well, apart from the TV bit :D )  but then spiders generally freak me out. I only just about tolerate them because they eat flies and I hate them even more!!

Glad to hear you're getting out now, though :P
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 18.07.06 16:58 UTC
In forensics now.  Perhaps I have an obsession with the gross :D :D
- By ShaynLola Date 18.07.06 17:47 UTC
Yep, I'd say that was a sideways move in the gross stakes! :D
