We don't have them but I was just wondering  (being really nosey here :D ) what those of you would do in this situation.

The local council are digging up the local dual carriageway at the end of my road (I live in a cul-de-sac) Today I went to brush my teeth - in brown water  YUK! On investigating I found a large water truck outside using the hydrant to fill the tank. Ok, I phoned the water board (the guy on the truck said my water shouldn't be brown  ) who told me it was just the filtration sand coming through the pipes and wouldn't do us any harm. If I was worried I could just run off the water from the kitchen tap until it ran clear. My garden got a good watering :D Anyway, 20 minutes after clearing the water the truck was back again and, yep, the water has gone brown again

Anyway, what I wanted to know is, to those of you with metres, would you have to pay for clearing the water? Or would the cuncil, or water board, or someone else pay for it? I think I would be very angry if I had to pay for something outwith my control.

No water meters here thankfully - during this hot spell the kids are continually turning on the fire hydrants and leaving us for lengthy spells without water which of course results in lengthy spells of running the dirty water off before using again

I'd certainly be less than happy if as a householder we had to pay for this so will be interested to see replies from anyone who is metered :)

We have a meter and no, you only pay for what comes into your house so you wouldn't pay for the water being used to clean the filter ...well, they charge you IN the water rates but not for actual useage if you see what I mean?

I'm not sure that was the question, Mel :D :D

I'm sure if you ring the water company, they will credit you for the water you used, especially if you tell them you were advised to do it :) We have a water meter and had a leak from the meter. They did credit us for the wasted water - but perseverance is sometimes necessary :D :D :D

Thanks Daisy ;) That was the question I was asking :)

As I said, we don't have meters, I was just curious. :D

The water is still coming out brown :( Think I'll wait until it cools down a bit before watering the garden again (no hose pipe ban either :D ) So glad I live in Scotland

My mum's street is having some works done on the water system on the street. The letter she got sent stated - If you have a water meter take the current reading before you start running the water clear and then once clear take another reading and inform your suppier. So no you dont have to pay for it. But if you give a larger than average reading then they might investigate as nodoubt someone will try it on

we're on meters and if theres any work being carried our by the water board, we get a few days notice. As for being charged for the brown watger, i'm not sure. I've not seen anything on the bills that suggests a balance reduction for unusable water, so i'm assuming we pay for it.

It's not the water board that are doing the work. The road is being resurfaced (about time ;) ) Thanks folks. I really should get out more  ;) Then I wouldn't be so nosey about things :D :D :D :D

We have a meter, and pay for what goes through. If the water was silty and we had to run it off, then yes we would pay for it. Not sure how we would stand if we complained as we have not had this happen (fingers firmly crossed now ;) ) but I would try for compensation of some sort.
