Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Natures menu raw meats

Hi guys. After all the probs weve had with molly and her delicate tum and the unpredictable nature of naturediet supplies I'm looking into BARF. Currently feeding naturesmenu and wafcol as wet food seems to really agree with her. Does anyone use regularly the natures menu raw complete meats? If so how do you rate them and how much do they cost, feeding quanities etc? Trying to weigh up changing after the holdiays so have about 5 weeks to completely sort it out. Thought this complete frozen might be easier than a do it yourself (yes I'm being lazy!! :) ). Thanks

Hi MM - I know a number of people that feed the naturesmenu frozen minces and blocks with very good results.  I have to admit I always have some in the freezer - just in case my supplies run out or if I leave the dogs with someone for a day or two.  They are very convenient.
What I dont like so much about them (and its a personal thing really) is that the meat is not human grade.  I prefer to feed mine human grade just so that I know exactly what is in it and the quality.
It is also useful for building your confidence ;) as the bone is left in but it is ground down.  You may also notice that the varieties that aren't chicken DO actually contain a lot of chicken ie: the rabbit dinner is mostly chicken   Best to pop down the butchers and buy a rabbit :D
Give it a try - your dogs might do very well on it.  Just take out the freezer, defrost and feed.  The dogs I know fed on this love it and do very well on it.
Sarah :)

Not sure if they are similar, but I have used Prize Choice frozen raw mince for years. It is very good - a 400g is around 60p, depending on variety. Some varieties also contain ground bone. They do beef, chicken, lamb, rabbit, fish, tripe and some are also mixed with offal. I haven't got the time, freezer space to do 'proper' BARF and these meats supplement the RMBs etc that I can give :)

I thought all pet sold in the UK had to be human grade, aka fit for human consumption?

Well have spoken to OH and he agrees that we'll give it a go once we're back from hols. He knows a butchers son and is going to enquire about bones and chicken wings. What type of bones should he ask for?  Feel so sorry for our Molly who yet again kept up us last night with a poorly stomach. We think it was the beef and tripe natures menu that set her off so she's had miniumal food today and has only been once but still rather runny (although better than the cow pat in the garden this morning!!!) Thanks for your replies.

Poor Molly :(  I apologise as previously I was actually referring to the prize choice blocks (thanks Daisy :))  That said I have the naturesmenu lamb and heart mince in my freezer right now and also some Prize choice blocks.  Why dont you try her on maybe the chicken block or the rabbit?  There is bone there but ground down.  When you get a to a butcher you wanna take all you can get ;)  Maybe to start off though go for chicken wings/chicken carcass.  Give her a wing and see how she does.
Yesterday I picked up 4 carrier bags of 'waste' from my butcher.  They contained 20 chicken carcasses, some beef, Pigs trotters, some wing tips, pork bones (more recreational than part of diet as they were practically whole legs!!)  That will feed my dogs for probably over two weeks and I gave him £4 for that little lot ;)
This morning my two had a chick carcass each (in the garden) and they will have their trotters tomorrow :)

Hey MM - why not go to Pets at Home and get a bag of Chick mince or a block and give her a little tonight or in the morning?

Thanks Rozzer. The vets we go to is actually in PAH so I will pick up some of the ravvit or chicken enroute and see if that helps. The poor thing has always had a delicate tum. Thank goodness the other one can eat anything ( thats probably somethin to do with the feathers she insists of munching :)) Have now instructed OH to ask for whatever we can get especially the chicken wings  and carcasses. Thanks for the advice.
