My bitch was due her 2nd litter yesterday - 9 weeks from 2nd mating.  She is showing no signs of going into labour apart from a clearish discharge that she has had for a few days.  She is very relaxed.  She is not very large, but only had 3 pups with her 1st litter - born after 9 weeks from 2nd mating, very easily and fairly quickly.  How long should I leave it before contacting the vet for advice? Or any tips to get her started - don't think she would appreciate a hot curry!!

If she is eating and happy within herself then don't worry, pups do arrive late just like with us, but after today, I would pop her along to your vet just for a check over, to make sure there are no probs or absorbtions, or whether she needs inducing, I take it you know it isn't a phantom? She is probably being 'johnny come lately' and waiting for the opportune moment when your back is turned to start. :-)

P.S. Small tip to get her started just some very light walking exercise let her give your front room a few rounds or a nice slow stroll around the block.

walk around the block??! my girl was having her normal walk including some light running on both days that she gave birth!! i think a curry might be better

Are the pups still active? If so you've got a while to go yet. :) Remember that 63 days is only an average. My last litter was born 66 days after the 2nd mating.

Pups are still active - felt them earlier this morning.  Just off to Sainsbury's - if nothing happened when I get back, will take her for another walk round the block!  Thanks for your advice.

My vet wouldn't do anything until 6 days after the due date, from the first mating.  I know a lot of people on here wouldn't be happy with that but when the pups are still moving it doesn't worry me and they usually go quiet the day before delivery.

Just to let you know - litter of 2 safely delivered early yesterday morning - better late than never.  Puppies good size, doing well and both bitches.  Have been desperate for a bitch puppy to keep here.  Mum fine after long and difficult labour.  Thanks to everyone who replied to me.
