I am new to this forum but have been viewing threads here for a few weeks and have found this site one of the most invaluable and accurate source of information for breeding on the web.
I recently breed my 4yr old bitch for the first time, unfortunately things did not go to plan. She had all the signs of going into labour on day 64 after almost 48 hours nothing had happened so I took her to the vet, she confirmed that treacle had terminated her pup's, it was upsetting for us all, but thanks to information on this site i had some idea of what to expect.
We've just got back from her last check at the vet she had a scan and thank god treacle is ok she is absorbing everything as expected and shouldn't need assistance.
My little bit of advice to 1st time breeders would be think about weather you can handle the worry if anything goes wrong (I have almost made myself ill the last few days with worry about me doggy). And listen to the advice of the people on this site, they know what there talking about!!
Thanx u !xx
Welcome to the site lynz83, so sorry it is not under happier circumstances. I'm glad that your girl is well and going to be ok, this time just wasn't meant to be, the main thing is that Treacle is fine. I wish you luck in the future.

Hi lynz83. Sorry to hear about your girl's trouble but happy to hear that she is doing fine.
Hope you have better luck next time.

It may be worth considering vaccinating against canine herpes virus next time, as this is linked with abortion and fading puppy syndrome, so might be worthwhile. It is given at or a few days after mating and toward the end of pregnancy and has been beneficial to breeders that have had breeding difficulties with their bitches.
Thanxs for all your replies, and will look into vaccinating if i do decide to breed her again, i'm not sure if i'm going to yet, but would love to experience it at some point in the future. If i do i will definitely be looking to the peep's on this forum for advice, you lot (like me) obviously think the world of your pet's.
Brainless, how much do the jabs against canine herpes cost? Is it the same as a booster jab or more, because it's more specialised?

Have no idea as don't know anyone closely that has used it. Have heard one lady in my breed used it after several things going amiss with /litters/potential litters.
Definitely something you would probably have to ask the vet for specially and in advance.

Depending on which one you use.... I use Eurican Herpes 205 from Merial and each inj. is around £28.00. 2 injections. one on day of mating and the other exactly 2 weeks before due whelping date
