A friend I grew up with, who now lives in America, had a double mastectomy a couple of days ago (she's 35).  Her dad tells me she's doing well, but I haven't spoken to her yet.  Her two older sisters are also having double mastectomys as they all have the gene that means they have an 85% chance of getting breast cancer, but my friend's the only one of the three that actually has cancer.  Their mum died 20 years ago of this disease and this is why they were all tested for the gene.

I have a card sitting here that I want to send her, but am having difficulty thinking what to write in it.  Please help.

Arrrr, thats so sad. I would put something about what you have been doing, family, work ect.. and then thinking of you all ,miss you at the end! try and keep off the subject of the op, but she will know you are thinking of her at this awfull time!

I agree with that too.  Try and keep it light and just let her know you are thinking of her.  I am sure she would like to have as much info as possible on what you are up to so she has something else to think about.

When my sister had cancer she liked to hear other peoples news and not dwell on her problems.  It made her feel much better about things.

I agree with what has been said, Iam sure your card would be a lift up :)

ntaurally it's a very sensitive subject and an extremely worried family at the moment - I'm sure your friend will be uplifted to hear from you and as others have suggested I'd write something light and newsy :)  

That said, I don't think you should avoid mentioning you're feelings - that's the good thing about being able to open our hearts on paper rather than face to face or over the phone.  I'm sure your friend will be glad to know you're *there* - that's what always matters most to me, not distance.
