Our 3 months old GR. Goes through a routine (approx. once a day/every other day) of racing from the garden into the kitchen (quite fast) jumps into her bed and keep circling very fast, jumping, biting and barking at it for about 3 minutes. Should we stop her? We are worried that she will hurt her hip/bones.. Could it be because I washed her bed? Need to keep a closer eye on this. Sorry can't give more details (I am keeping notes on so many things).. Thanks.

Even golden oldies have mad half hours :D   Sounds like your puppy is just bursting with exuberance and typical nonsense play - I'd let her get on with it providing it's not on a slippy surface.  Just ducking and diving around is how youngsters get their exercise so provided you ensure she is on a safe footing and not likely to crash into walls / solid furniture etc it shouldn't be a problem :)

LOL. Willis is like this 12 hours of the day :D
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 12.07.06 11:58 UTC
Anton is still like this today and he was a nutter as a puppy :d
- By LINE [gb] Date 12.07.06 12:07 UTC
Thanks for that. Was just a little concern about reading advice about over exercising. She also has 3-4 walks a day (10-15mins) and runs or lazes around and play (in the kitchen and garden) 10hrs a day.

For those who are interested, she visited the lounge and peed on the carpet after 10 minutes so we will wait a little longer for that one!!

My dog is 7 and he still does this charging back and forward to the garden/livingroom, especially when he has a bonio in his mouth :)  I think its normal unless the dog appears unduly stressed about something.

oh LOL that brings back memories. I saw this for the first time in 1984 with my Golden puppy. :) Never did him any harm, he grew up with an excellent hip score. We used to say he "landed" in his bed as basically he was flying through the house.

lol oh i love them doing that in our breed we call it the zoomies :D :D when it starts i run quickly and open the back door and kick them out as i have had soo much damage done in the house by 3 idiot danes you wouldn't believe! they broke my washing machine door it now hangs weirdly on one broken hinge and falls off everytime you open it.
- By LINE [gb] Date 12.07.06 14:21 UTC
LOL!!! Thank you. We will look forward to the future flying/zooming practices.

Your lucky you've only got one pup doing it...we have to take cover when our two monsters have their mad half hour (50kg+ each) as, inevitably, one or other will try to use your lap as a landing pad

Its amazing what speed a westie can get up to running a circuit around the living room:eek:

I really miss the mad puppy zoomies and the other night I was so thrilled when Nips had a seriously zoomy 10 minutes - I think the rabbits had failed to come out to play so he had some unused energy to get rid of!

My dachsies do it,the pup goes width ways and does figure of 8's round the furniture,Rhuari runs the length of the lounge/dinner and conservatory and some how they don't collide in the middle and no one slows up,this goes on for a good 5 minutes then they lie down together and have a nap. This happens at least once a day, don't know what starts it but it causes quite a draught.

At first glance I thought you were having flying/zooming parties - Milo wants to join in. He's very good at it and wants to run around like a mad dog with Amber please. :-D
- By JaneG [gb] Date 12.07.06 17:22 UTC
lol Mygirl I do the same, I chuck mine out in the front garden to race round the grass in circles - much better than the livingroom!

My 8.5 month old GR also does this - not sure what triggers it but she runs full pelt from the back of the house to the front on what I can only describe as 'lowered suspension' - not like proper running ....all aeroodynamic. Her ears go back and she her toungue hangs out.. we just get out of her way.

She does in the back garden when we're playing the hose game too, but this time she jumps in her pool and out again - it really is funny to watch. I used to worry about her hips as well, but to be honest there's not stopping her during her mad minute.

And I thought I was the only one!!!  My 5 mth GR does it as well - from the garden through the lounge, hall, kitchen and dining room.  She runs probably 2/3 times round the dining table then out again.  If she can get away with it, Misty will jump full pelt onto/across the settees as well ........whether we are on them or not!!!!!!! :D :D :D

We used to have a coffee table in the middle of our lounge but we found that Misty used to charge towards it and depending on when she jumped at the right time as to whether she slammed into it  or jumped over it!!  Its now been pushed to the edge of the room out of the way!! :p

My afghan pups have always made a habit of "furniture bouncing" when they have their mad minutes. It involves bouncing from chair to chair to sofa to chair, barely touching the floor in between......and at such high speed you can't catch them. They get a mad look on their faces too, and then stop, gasping, toungues hanging out! :D
- By LucyD [gb] Date 14.07.06 06:53 UTC
Yep, Ellie gets the zoomies sometimes - less often now she's 19 months old, but still at least twice a week! :-)

Don't know if anyone remembers Mrs Pumphry on All Creatures Great and Small years ago?  She was always calling the vet out to her dog who was going 'cracker dog' as she called it, just having a mad ten minutes every evening.

My parents JR used to do the wall of death round the living room walls she went so fast!

Since then we have always called this behaviour 'crackerdog' and every single one of our dogs and my parents dogs have done this!  I love watching them!
- By roz [gb] Date 14.07.06 16:16 UTC
I remember her! Brilliant character who always got her words muddled. If I remember rightly she also described the dog as going "bezique" instead of beserk (while it was being cracker dog) and this is how we describe the zoomies.

Having got a JRT, I can confirm that you can't beat 'em for a seriously bezique wall of death impersonation.
- By Harley Date 14.07.06 18:00 UTC
Yep I remember her too and her dog was also suffering from "flop bot" if I remember rightly.
- By Beardy [gb] Date 14.07.06 18:24 UTC
My little Tilly (X breed terrier) could also do 'the wall of death'. Good name for it!! She could do it without touching the floor!! Table, coffee table, chair, settee, chair etc. Very funny you might think, but not so funny when a full grown GSD is in pursuit & thinks he can do it as well. Had to put a stop to it! She has done the floor show tonight while I have been on this site. Just as well that she didn't pull the telephone extension wire out of the socket, luckily she kept jumping it, mind you that could be the agility training that she has just started. Never a dull moment with dogs in the house!
- By DianeSolo [gb] Date 14.07.06 21:07 UTC
yes, our little TT puppy does it too, bless him, Garden, kitchen, lounge, then a flying leap at either OH or myself. still after a few minutes of doing that he is tired out & becomes lovely & cuddly.....aaah!
- By LINE [gb] Date 31.07.06 15:25 UTC
LOL!!! Well you'll be glad to hear that Amber still does this and now she has added our loundge settee to the list!!!
Yes, Milo we gathered that you have an interest in our little one :-D
