Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Discharge 12 days after mating (locked)
- By scarlettwynter [gb] Date 27.06.06 05:45 UTC
Hi,

My bitch was mated 12 and 13 days ago and yesterday when she went for a wee I noticed some reddish/brown discharge in it, not a lot. It only seems to come out when she does a wee and her coat isn't stained from it (easy to see ,thankfully, on a white dog). She is bright and happy, the vet gave her a course of Clavaseptin and said just to keep an eye on her. He had a "feel" of her and said that he felt the uterus but couldn't really feel anything inside??? I thought that nothing could be felt until about 28 days:confused. The vet also said she may be absorbing but he wasn't very sure, if the discharge came from low down that it may not be a problem. He said all going well that he would see her in a couple of weeks to check for pregnancy.

Has anyone ever experienced this?? I am so desperate for a pup from this mating but of course my girl comes first and I am worried about her.

Thank you

Hi,

If you have a look at a very recent post 'discharge' from bek, it should put your mind at rest.  Your vet is correct in what he has said to you, you will have a much fuller story in a couple of weeks time, bek had a very happy ending and I will have my fingers crossed for you too, you will see from the post it is not uncommon.

Thank you I will go and have a look at bek's posting.

could this not simply be the end of her season?

My last litter, my girl 'bled' all the way through her pregnancy,  she stayed on Synulox for 6 weeks out of the 9, she had a healthy litter of 6 pups.  So try and stay positive, it's way too early to know one way or the other yet.

Hi Guys you may remember my post about trouble acheiving a tie, well supprised to find this thread as my bitch also started with discharge around 14 days after being mated. My vets REFUSED to give me anti-biotics, which left me furious, he says there was no need as my bitch was happy and healthy with no temp..... I'd still rather have had some. Anyways.... We scan on the 14th to see if she's re-absorbed the babies, so fingers are tightly crossed this end too.

I'm afraid I'm with your vet on this one :)  No symptoms of infection, no antibiotics for me.  Overuse of antibiotics has proved a headache for human and veterinary medicine.  Hopefully it is an implantation bleed and all will be well when you have her scan :) If she was starting to abort or reabsorb and it was due to infection I think it would have been too late for antibiotics anyway because they would have taken about another 3 days or so to have any effect.
Fingers crossed :)

Hi,

Was back at the vet today and my little girl is in pup. The discharge is still there but slight. The vet didn't give her any more antibiotics as she is well and apart from the discharge is showing no signs of infection. Just hope that she keeps fine.

Congratulations, I must admit tht I'm another one who agrees with your vets course of action, too many antibiotics re given out to people nd animals these days and sometimes they don't even know what it' being prescribed for!

With our last litter my girl stayed on AB's from 3 weeks till she whelped, my vet said 'the books' say not to use them long term, but had it been his girl that had similar symptoms, he too would have insisted on her staying on AB's, so was happy for us to continue.

My girl that had the discharge back in 2004 was fine while on the AB's but the week after we stopped, discharge stopped and the litter died :(  this was at 7 weeks pregnant.

So, if we ever are in the same situation, I will insist on them staying on the AB's till the end, I would not risk it again, my vet said quite possibly if she had stayed on the AB's then the litter may have survived.

Well we find out tomorrow at 3:30 if our girl has re-absorbed babies, to be honest we don't hold out much hope of there being anything in there. But its been up-lifting to read that at least someone with the same problem has agood outcome, Congrats on the confirmation of pregnancy by the way! Keep everything crossed for us :o)

Thank you. I really hope that you get good news tomorrow.

Thank you. Good news ..... well sort of.... The vet says she is in pup. However he's going by the fact her uterine horns are filled with black fluid?????? Ive always had scans before where the person actually see's some form of puppy. Anyway, i couldn't believe what my vet was saying so to make me feel better he will re-scan in 2 weeks time, apparently we should be able to see bones formed at this stage??? So far the only glimmer of hope we have for pups is two round black fluid filled uterine horns at 28 days. Hope he's right.

That is good to hear and I will continue to keep everything crossed for you.I am sure that all will go well for you and your girl.

All going well are your babies due about the same time as mine, August 16th approx?
- By Bears_mum [gb] Date 19.07.06 13:13 UTC
Hi

Sorry i haven't replied sooner. We're due around the 18th - 20th August. We're hoping that the vet has this right and there are actually babies in there, she's starting to look pregnant and is eating more now so fingers crossed.

Best of luck for yours xxxx
