Hi everyone, My lab x was in heat over 12 weeks ago and is producing alot of milk, She is eating, drinking well and is her normal bouncy self.
The problem i have is that i have never had a bitch like this she is not mothering anything there was noway she could have come in contact with any male dogs as she was under constant supervision so i know this is a phantom.

She has no discharge apart from lastweek when she had a smal clear discharge as if she was in whelp but nothing since.
She is a healthy 1yr old, as soon as she cleans her teats milk comes out she is not depressed if anything she is more hyper than usually hahah.

Should i be worried or will she get over this on her own, One of my german shepherds when she had a phantom only produced a small amount of milk and it was gone again within a week by 3 weeks she was totally dry and she used to mother things..

My vet would not spay her until 12 weeks after her heat well now she is having this problem she wont do her till she come out of it.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated, I refuse to use galastop again as my other dog was ill after her 2nd dose so i dont want to use that again....

Thanks for any help or advice

It should clear on it's own, but you might have to postpone spaying until after the next season (if she is less than two months away from the next one) as a friend had to with her bitch that had a phantom.

Thanks for the quick responce, I was thinking that as i thought it should be 12 weeks after a heat which is usually 12 weeks before the next, Thanks for confirming that me.

Well looks like i will be going through another heavy heat with her think i will buy those doggy pants for her this time hahah..

Again thanks

Hopefully it will subside within the next 3 or 4 weeks so you can get her done this time.

If you think about it if she was in season 12 weeks ago, had she been mated her litter would be about a week old,s o she is at the right stage to have milk.

It might be worth cutting her protein down, by giving her a senior food for example, and increase the exercise (when it is cool) and remove her bedding and her bed even, as this harsh regime tends to make their bodies forget about being Mums.

I would discourage her from licking her teats as this will stimulate them.  A Polo shirt put on back to front will be useful and you can pin any excess to keep her from licking.

An old remedy to stop milk production is to add a small amount of Epsom salts to her drinking water. Perhaps you ought to check with your vet first but I seem to remember using it on my first bitch without ill effects & that it worked.
