Hi all,  I've never had this problem with any of my other dogs so need some advice please.  My puppy (nearly 9 weeks old) is absolutely perfect except for the fact that he refuses point blank to wee outside.  I naturally expect some accidents indoors but it doesn't matter how long we stay outside with him he waits until we come back into the house before going to the toilet.  He poos outside no problem but we have stayed outside with him for up to 5 hours and he still won't wee (we can see that he's desperate though).  He goes through the night completely dry and is a very happy, confident puppy.  We've even tried putting paper down outside (don't usually like the paper method, prefer to teach outside straight away) but he still won't go.  Any advice please?  Thanks.

Are you taking him outside specifically to wee?  If so and you are getting anxious when he doesn't go, perhaps he is picking up on that.  Might be worth just taking him outside to play, which might stimulate him to wee and then praising him to the hilt when he does.  I think it is amazing that he is dry at night!

Firstly make sure that your pup has access to get outside by himself, can you leave a door open, as he will not ask to go to the toilet at this age, pups pee constanstantly at this age.

You are doing the right thing in staying with him, and I am dumbfounded that he will not go, especially upto 5 hours outside.

Firstly as soon as he wakes up in the morning, put him straight outside and stay with him, (I can't believe he won't wee then) praise him to the hilt when he does.

As soon as he has had a meal, or another nap take him straight outside,

Do not close the house door, leave it open and stay outside with him.

When he is inside the house watch him like a hawk the moment he begins to sniff the floor, or circle grab him and put him outside, show him a spot where to go, stand there and stay with him until he goes. Take him to the same spot each time you take him outside.

If you have not done so, clean all the pee areas in your home with bio, soap powders, ( not exactly sure what products are best, other kind members will tell you)  continue to watch him and if you do everything above and it is still not enticing him to pee outside then wait until he starts to wee, grab him mid way ruuuun and pop him outside on the chosen spot to force him to finish out there, then praise him to the hilt.

The pup is only a tiny baby, so don't expect him to be 100% clean, some breeds take an awfully long time to toilet train, other pups are very quick to learn, praise and reward will teach him so much quicker.

It will all come together eventually, he is so young at the moment. :-)

Thanks for the replies so far.  As soon as he wakes up we take him outside as well as after food.  We walk up and down with him, my other dog plays with him, all sorts, but he still won't go.  If we catch him when he starts to go inside and rush him oustide he still won't go even to finish off.  He doesn't seem anxious and we aren't either, it's really strange.  When we catch him we say 'No' and then 'outside' so we are hoping that eventually he'll change.  If we leave the back door open he will go inside to wee and then come back outside to play.  Tried getting him to watch the older dog weeing outside as well as putting some kitchen paper outside that we cleaned up his wee inside with in the hopes that he'll smell it and thus go on it outside.  Nothing!  As Toyah would say...it's a mystery!!!

Very pleased that you have an older dog, they are excellent for teaching pups especially when he goes into the outside world he will learn to pee and do his business out there much quicker with your other dog to copy from, but this may be the problem for your pup at home at this age, he can proberbly smell the scent outside from your older dog and so wishes to leave his scent in the home, continue with everything that you are doing, I promise it will eventually click, he is marking his territory, the cleaning products will be the best thing to get rid of his scent, forcing him to find a special place in the garden to scent instead.

I was also wondering if maybe the scent or presence of the other dog is part of the problem, is the other dog usually with you and pup in the garden?

Another thought is if you have a sensitive puppy (what breed or x is he?) he may be a bit scared to wee in your presence if you have told him No if it has by any chance startled or scared him.

The older dog is usually with us outside but not all the time.  He doesn't seem scared, not scared of anything!  He is a Cairn Terrier as is the older dog (nearly 2 years old).  He will poo outside no problem but not wee.  Wondered if this, along with the completely dry nights, could mean he may have a urine infection.  What do you think?

He is also humping things.  Is this normal at 8/9 weeks????

Yes humping can start very early.My dachsie started at that age,now only does it now and again.

Have I got this right your Pup is not weeing at all for 5 hrs or has he sneaked back in in that time and done the deed? My new pup tends to be triggered by sniffing where my older dog has been,sometimes she will go as soon as she is put out like in the morning other times she wanders up and down sniffing the air etc. but if she comes on a recent wee of Rhuari's she will then go straight away. I only have a small enclosed area at the side of the house for toileting and then the rest of the garden for playing in. I have noticed when I disinfect the area that the pup tries to scrape that smell away before she does anything.

Have you tried a pee post? I have seen them in PAH and they are impregnated with a smell that encourages the pup/dog to wee in a certain area.

I have no other suggestions.

Could it be, that your puppy is very distructed when outside, because you said the older dog is playing with him when you take him outside.  I would take the pup out only and no playing, nothing whatsoever, but as soon as he wee'ed outside, the fun may start. 

HE WEED OUTSIDE!!!!!!!

He started to go inside again and we grabbed him right at the start.  Outside he went and about ten minutes later he finished off in the garden.  What a lot of praise he got.  Thank you for all your suggestions and replies.

He wasn't weeing at all for about 5 hours at a time and went through the night again last night which is really good for his age.  Today he's been about 3/4 times only.  Seems happy enough though.  We did try to take him out on his own and just stand there and still he wouldn't go.  Anyway, looks like he's finally getting the message.  Thanks again everyone.
