Topic Dog Boards / General / Bringing Dog to UK from ROI

I am just back from Dublin but while i was there a friend of the family offered me a a collie pup which I am very keen to bring over, my question is...... What are the laws relating to bringing a dog into the UK from ROI (i.e. Jags, certificates, medical checks etc)? Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated. I seen how much help you have all been to my sister (Kelly lauchlan) regarding the lost greyhound and thought this would be the perfect place to get an answer to my question.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't think there are any checks at all. There certainly aren't when we travel to and from ROI with our dogs for the circuit.

Thanks very much for your reply, sounds like its going to be alot less hassle than I thought... :)

The pup is only 9 weaks old and is presently living in a barn in ireland, not had any injections yet, obviously I intend to get those done before bringing him over, just wondered if there were any certificates etc that would be required with it being so young?

None, but obviously a good idea to get them done.

I thought that the pups had to have their 1st injection before travelling, and also some airlines state that they have to be vetted before travelling, and have to travel with a vet certificate. I have just recently looked into this again as I am organising air transport for two colleagues that are bringing in pups from the UK to Jersey...if you fly with British Midland, they do not need to be vetted..but the crate they travel in, has to be to specific airline requirements...

You may well be right about travelling by air - I hadn't thought about that. I was thinking of travelling by ferry when you either have the puppy with you or it stays in the car.

We flew two dogs from Glasgow to Stanstead on Ryan Air. There was no innoculation requirement, or cage type specification, other than the cage had to be below a certain size. The cost was £15.00 per dog, and they were looked after very well.

Might consider flying it in then, Ryan air is who we just used to fly to and from ireland, and £15.00 per dog is very reasonable, i wouldnt think there would much difference for an ireland flight. Going to get the injections done over in ireland anyway so its looking like if they are done I should have no problems, there is no way I would bring a dog into the country without at least having done that first. Thank you all for your comments.

I know with British Midland, the cost of the flight is £10 and then it is £2.25 per kilo on top of the flight, and the boxes to need to be to a specific requirement (British Midland may be different to other airlines) :D
