Well I am nearly there on total Barf now

I was reading one of my Barf books and it went into the subject and did say it was ok.

I sort of agree as well as I am not a regular feeder as in same time every day and do sometimes miss a meal as have always thought in the wild dogs would not have a regular feeding time :)

Would like to know who agrees or disagrees and why :)

Well i have only just started feeding BARF but my dogs would go crazy if they didn't eat for a day. I did try but they were just so clingy and whining that i stopeed fasting just because they weren't happy

I think it depends on your dogs

If I tried to regularly fast Shay for 24 hours, he'd probably put himself up for rehoming :rolleyes: :D

Needless to say, I don't regularly fast them... simply don't see the need to. They don't always get fed at the same time each day as they don't have a set routine but they do get their two meals a day, every day :)

It was generally a rule of the thumb in our neck of the woods years ago to fast a dog for 1 day once a week.  The theory back then was to rest the digestive system while the body could concentrate on repair and cleaning out toxins.  I sometimes fast myself and feel so much better for it, i.e. more energy and not as sluggish. 

I have also read that feeding the RMB is best to do in the evening rather than the morning ? ;)

I feed the muscle meat/offal etc in the morning and the RMB in the evening so it has a long time within which to digest before any exercise - but I am not totally rigid with that it just depends what I have on hand for that day.

Im a suscriber to 'Breed appropriate' as well as 'Biologically' so some things I do are Sibe specific.
However taught to me my by grandfather, with working dogs in Norway and used by his Gramps before and my mentor ( a French/Finnish working kennel) was to feed RMB at evenings.
    My mentor taught me that it was important to fast dogs that were crossing over to RAW diets from kibble/complete, during the transition period, then up to you afterwards. I must confess I always do that UNLESS its a puppy, I dont believe it's wise to fast Puppies (Im sure no one would recommend that, anyway) and rarely using fasting after the transition. prefering to cut down instead at times to one meal or light meal (although in my breed Sibes may well naturally fast, so I play that by ear and esp in Summer when excercise level goes down)

I must share my tip of the week now Ive found somewhere appropriate! Ikea have got GIANT ice cube tray the tray makes four big huge square ones...Im using it for my 'Glop!!' (pet name for Storms blender whizzed veggies and offal,alfalfa etc) and he's loving his Glop lollies!! :D

The new freezers are on order so we will be able to get things moving in getting stocked up !

We have done well this week apart from a bit of an incident with some whizzed up Chard which didn't go down too well with Mike as it gave them horrific smelly loud bottoms :D :D

ooh theyre great! highly recommend them they are that bendy rubber type which makes taking them out nice and easy and they stack in the freezer well too.

Storm is taking the PYO (in the land opposite ours selling strawbs/beans etc) too literally bringing me a limp warm Bunny this morning from our Copse..very pleased with himself :rolleyes:
Im fine with taking the cleaver to most things but for some reason picking up this little bunny as it was all warm and limp brought a lump to my throat (and Im sure I could hear the distant strains of "Bright Eyes" playing in the distance.. )

does anyone have any reasons for feeding bones in evening?????

is it just because of the exercise????  i have been feeding bones in the morning mainly because its quicker than getting the meat ready (which i feed in the evening.) 

also, at the tail end of last season i was finding it difficult to fit the bone meals in around training.  i dont want the dogs running with bones in their system.  luckily, my butcher will mince/grind my chk wings for me now so i dont need to worry about that.

but would be interested to know if there are any others who run dogs in harness and what do they do about bone meals when training hard?????  how do you fit them in??  is there an accepted time scale for feeding bones then working???

must admit, i am thinking of feeding once a day now.  i really dont think they need two meals in the summer.  they dont seem to be looking for food as much as they did on kibble.

i do fast dogs sometimes over the summer, but like husky gal wouldnt do it with a puppy.  i also wouldnt do it in the winter with our dogs that are worked.  i did this when they were on kibble too.

I never fast my dogs, as I train every day and use food for training, in fact that is when they usually get fed.  They very rarely get anything for free!

My dog is food orientated except when on the lead.  I followed recommendations for feeding only while walking her to try and combat the pulling.  The idea being that eventually she would be hungry enough for me to be able to stop the pulling by tempting her with food.  After 4 days where she would totally refuse food on the walks I caved in.  Dogs vary in lots of ways including stubborness
