Hi

Looking for a breed of dog I have a feeling doesnt exsist.

Small/medium rough coated whippet type. like a small deerhound/ wolfhound.

The only breed  I can think of is a lurcher but was wondering if there was another breed that fitted the description.

Any ideas

I saw a dog exactly like you are describing at the cat and dog home a while ago - he was like a mini deerhound and really cute.  Does it have to be a pedigree you're after?  Many rescue homes might have a cross breed that would fit the bill.  But then you take on some of the problems that can accompany rescue dogs.  Hope you find something.

you are perfectly describing a bedlingtonwhippet. A very common lurcher type & certainly very nice little dogs, they look like miniature deerhounds

Yes  thankyou something like the bedlington whippet cross.  I am not keen on a cross and would prefer a "proper" breed. But not a bedlington.

What are you looking for character wise?  Is it the terrier part that is putting you off.  I don't know if you already know this but the Bedlington is a much quieter less "sharp" terrier than most.

no no no no no I love terriers and their characters. I have kept Jack Russells for as many years as I can remember.

it is the whole cross thing.  I am not keen on the bedlingtons appearance thats all. Even without its fancy cut I feel they are to poodley for me. Trying not to offend anyone here lol.

I am looking for a puppy, must be a pup, and by buying a cross you are never sure how it is going to turn out even when you see the parents you dont have the pedigree behind them.

The thing about a straight bedlington x whippet  is that you do have a pretty good idea how the pups will turn out. This is a long established cross and they will all end up like miniature deerhounds.

Now you may be looking at the wrong dogs, many pictures on the web are of american and european dogs and are extremely poodley looking.  British dogs are on the whole a lot more erm... practical looking (with some exceptions obviously ;) )  But grooming parlours do tend to turn them out looking like a poodle :rolleyes: which really is inexcusable as the Bedlie trim is a doddle compared to what they turn them out like

My only problem with my Bedlingtons is that despite being groomed for a show, by the next day they look as if they haven't been groomed for weeks, there's a definate scruffyness to them.  I find Bedlington/Whippet lurchers look 'tidier' most of the time :D :D  But like you I prefer to have the knowledge of temperament and predictability of size/type etc.   temperament-wise they are much quieter than most terriers (altho one of mine at 2 years is feeling her feet and getting a bit gobby, but she'll settle with training) and can be quite houndlike ;)

Lovely dogs. Didnt realise they could do agility thats fab lol. It is something I would like to do with my next dog. Showed them to hubby but he wasnt impressed. men. He did like the whippet cross though.

Defintly want to avoid clipping to.

They can do agility and obedience (tho they can be a challenge in obedience as they may be able to do everything perfectly, but they may not want to :rolleyes: :D ) and I know someone who does the dancing with them which they love :)
I wouldn't be worried about the clipping :)  it's really easy to learn yourself :) doesn't take long and their coats are easy to keep knot free.  Even when they look like the dogs in the bottom picture they would still be able to show the next day :D :D  5 minutes a day combing keeps them looking great :D :D

Bet hubby would change his mind if he met some ;) they have a way about them ;)  my OH didn't want another dog of any kind ever again, then he met the Bedlingtons, then we had one, then he suggested breeding so we could keep another one to show, we now have 2 and he wouldn't mind another :D :D :D

he has met a pair and wasnt impressed. Said nice dogs but not for him. It was someone who worked and bred them and they had a litter at the time. Adorable but he wasnt tempted. Were as me I would of been sneeking one home with me lol. But that probably goes for any puppy.lolol

Someone suggested i was looking for a labradoodle :rolleyes:. So just out of interest I had a look on the net and came across the labradoodle club. It just comfirmed what i had originally thought. No two dogs looked the same. Yes there was a couple I could of easily taken home but to be honest i would rather go to the dogs home and get one that really needed a home rather than pay someone the money to breed crosses.

Did you look at the Portuguese Podengo?  Although is it Plushcourt have two types I think I could only see the smaller ones on their website.  Don't know the breeds characteristics but the ones that I saw in Portugal about 8 years ago were nice characters.

My Golly - just to be nosey, had a look at the Labradoodle site - quite a few 'breeders' are asking £900- £1000 for the puppies.

I think them lovley.  It is one of the advantages of liking to show in Stakes and Variety classes, you get o meet and know about other breeds and often find your preconceptions totally dispelled.

they do look lovely and the breed characteristics sound just what I am looking for, Sorry not the waterspaniel though to big.

Certaninly something to think about. It would have to be the small rough coated.

Problem is they are a million miles from me and not easy to meet. I would really want to spend some time with a breed before deciding it is right for our family.

Maybe I should get a cat instead lol

Just a thought, but if you like the look and temperament of the deerhound why not consider the full sized variety? I know you are going to say "too big" but in reality they take up very little space in the house (always assuming it is a comfortable space :) ) because they curl themselves away very tidily. And they have such laid back personalities that they don't intrude on the household in the way a large working breed would. I always say that our two shelties occupy more 'space' in the house than all the hounds put together!

yes I do love deerhounds but I am wanting another  small dog.

I really really really love dachshunds and have wanted a mini wired haired one for years but hubby has always said no. Last night he gave in and said I could have one.

But before i go out and find one I want him to meet a few and for him to be sure it is the right choice, he has only seen pictures and in the passing never up close.

I need to do more reserch to make sure it would fit into our family and is the right choice for all of us.

I would like to do obedience and agility with my new dog and cant really see a dachy jumping a fence lol so I will have to think about that. But fitting in with the family is the most important thing.

Well one famous judge and breeder has Mini Wires and Wolfhounds, so I think the breeds are likely to go well.

Just a quick update

After lots of discusions and reading we have decided on a whippet and hopefully I am collecting a wee girl this afternoon.

Hubby really wasnt keen on a dachie. just couldnt see himself walking it lol. And as she is to be a part of the family it is important everyone is happy with our choice.

I love whippets and he said I thought you always wanted one and that was it, I didnt think he did but he confessed he had a secret love of them. Men why he couldnt of said that in the first place lololol.

So this afternoon we are away to see a litter and all being well bringing a little blue and white bitch home with us. Cant wait.

I went for a blue and white but came home with the most gorgeous bluefawn brindle and white.

She is so delicate and fragile looking.

We are all on love and hubby is totally besotted lol
