Hi all, just received a reminder my subscription is due for renewal for OD & I`m wondering which one you prefer. I`ve had our dogs for the last year & the year before I had dog world. Do you think there`s a lot of difference between the two? I do it for the year as it works out cheaper but can`t really justify getting both. So any opinions before I choose would be very welcome.
Christine2
On the plus side for OD it comes quicker & regular, with DG I sometimes got none for a few wks & 3/4 would turn up together.

I'm glad you've asked peoples views on this Christine as I want to subscribe to one or the other - can't afford both :( Someone said something to me about show reports appear in one before the other but I can't remember which way round it is and don't know if that's even true. Do all reports appear in BOTH papers in time ?

No hard and fast rules, but with my breed I often find show reports are in DW the week before OD. On the other hand I have to recomend OD, as I help write a Breed notes column for them!

As Gwen said .. no hard and fast rules, but as I write bracco breed notes for DW I had better even the score and recommend DW :P Both papers have different styles. I think you just need to decide which style you prefer :D Several members write for DW :D

so my answer is to go and purchase a copy of both at the same time and see what style suits best :D I've had them both at odd times in the past but now I've been bitten by that blasted bug ;) I do want one regularly :D
As for you Christine2 I suppose I'd go for the one that arrives in your Sunny land most regularly if I were in your shoes :)

Sara, in a word .. yes :D but not forgetting that DW is a superior paper .. ROTFL
Christine, I agree with Sara. I would go with whoever can deliver the goods on time.
I don't get either but spoke to my step-nan who used to breed and she said her fav was dog world and even now she still has dog world..

Our Dogs seem to concentrate more on the North of England and also the reading is 'heavier'. I buy Our Dogs and my friend buys Dog World and then we swap, she has GSDs and I have Cavaliers so we can each cut out the show reports etc which are relevant to us both.

I also write breed notes for Dog World, but took Our dogs weekly for about 4 years!
Dog World has wider columns, and the print quality is better. I find the Our dogs print rubs off, and as I have poor eyesight this is a consideration.
Dog World are stricter on the breed note writers, and won't allow the reporting of Open show BOBs, only BIS, RBIS, and BPIS, whereas the writers in Our dogs have a bit more rope on this score.
Our Dogs tend to havge more extensive coverage of ovedrseas events, especially Irish shows.
Dog World seem to use more colour photography.
I like the feature writers in both papers, but prefer the show results as part of the main paper, adn not as an insert as it is in Our Dogs, as I get confused with two sets of page numbers!
I would suggest ordering both from your Newsagent fo0r a month or 6 weeks, and decide which style y6ou prefer. a lot cna depend on which breed note writer for your breed you like better, as often it is one of the first things people turn to!

Well normally correct but the Boxer notes on Windsor Champ
show were in OD before DW!!
I get both (nope not extremely rich) but I like the info that's
found in both papers and the article writers are v good.
Although I have to admit DW gets more ads for exemption shows in it.

Dog World used to have the critiques in before Our Dogs almost every time but Our Dogs have improved on this in the last year or so and there isn't so much difference now (although I would still put Dog World slightly ahead). I like the new Our Dogs format for show results.
There are exceptions but Our Dogs seem to have the better breed notes writers. (Leigh, I did say there are exceptions!) On the whole I prefer the regular writers in Dog World although once again I think Our Dogs has improved. Our Dogs is now including some good articles on obedience.
I'd go along with trying them both for a couple of weeks or so and deciding for yourself.

I think OD give their breed note writers more *freedom*. I am very restricted in what I can write. I know some of this is because I am covering an Import Register breed and we seem to have different goal posts to the other breeds, but I find it very frustrating at times. It is hard enough to find copy as it is, but when you have a numerically tiny breed like mine, it is near on impossible to find something to write about :-( Unfortunately, people are very quick to moan when there aren't any breed notes, but very few people get off their ass to supply information or even feedback. Sometimes, I wonder if anyone is actually out there at all  I would love to have the freedom that Ros, my OD counterpart has :-)
Moan over  lol

That is interesting Leigh. I had been discussing it with a friend and wondered if OD was stricter with their writers, ie threatening to get a new writer if they didn't produce notes frequently. We are lucky if we get any breed notes in Dog World at all (seems to be about 1 week in 5) and then they are always wrong. If the writer says a red rough bitch won BOB then you know it was a black smooth dog!
Seriously her results are always wrong. Just today she reports the death of a close friend of mine and says he was known for his black dogs and although he didn't show that often people often travelled to use his stud dogs. In all his life he didn't have a black dog and his dogs were very rarely ever used at stud. If you ever mention anything to her she says that she is dependent on what others tell her and it is not her fault, however I know when I tell her something she will still get it badly wrong when it appears in print.

I can't vouch for your notes writer Joan, but I am dependant on people contacting me with their show results, as I am not showing myself at the moment. People always assume that someone else will supply information of their wins etc, and then when they don't appear ... they moan!
I think all breed note correspondants are in the same boat. When I look at the lack of notes for numerically 'strong' breeds, then it's hardly surprising that numerically 'small' breeds are going to have even less news to go round. Sadly, the reader doesn't think this deeply about it.
All they can see is that *so and so* hasn't written breed notes AGAIN!
Copy is extremely hard to come by and from where I am sitting, the answer is simple ... no copy ~ no notes ;-)

I "think" you can get OD on the web for around £39 so if you were feeling rich you could buy DW and view OD online <g>

Hi, I tried both too and eventually decided on Dog World as I like their correspondants, especially Jane Lilley's column and Steve Dean's vet articles. Jack Peachey who does the Kc rules and Regs is always a hoot, and very accurate. As the show results, adverts and breed notes are simaliar, for me it came down to the regular contributors. And of course when thoroughly read are great for house training puppies on - only trouble is, you can bet your boots you just manage to lay down a few sheets by the door without the little rascals grabbing them first, they wee on it and then you see that really interesting article you meant to cut out and save - with a spreading wet patch !!

Same here ...used to buy both DW and OD back in the 80's but decided I preferred DW and I still buy it now...I don't subscribe though , just get it delivered every week.

i usually get both melody,no subs or anything just have them saved for me at the local news shop,i much prefer DW though especially with regard to the breed notes as OD just seems to have endless results and i have sent in results before and they have not been printed.there is usually a light note to the notes in DW as they are written by a skilled author, which makes them a lot more 'readable' and there is no bias.OD did not even print Crufts results for two years and refered to the winner as '''''the dog that won crufts''''' no congratulations even, sad really, DW does raise some topics and provides information where as the other is just a list of results and sometimes not even them for weeks on end.i don't particuarly like A.Braces column as it is mostly a run down of who he has bumped into at various junkets.i DO like Robert Killick's column as he and I think along the same lines!!!!!!!! DW's correspondant does also acknowledge other breeders successes.so there is something in both of them for me.

When I was working I used to take both but now I am retired I don't have time to read them both and the one I decided to keep on was Dog World and the main reason was the defeatest and depressing attude of some of the contribtors to Our Dogs. Know what they say is probably true but in my retirement I wish to become an Ostrich and stick my head a little way into the sand and not have the dog worlds problems ramed down my throat.
Ja:)kie
Hi All you lot are so funny :) Must admit I think DW has the edge style wise but OD is very reliable even if a couple of weeks late tho sometimes it has only been 1wk later so I`ll probably stay with it but I`m going to check Keroike suggestion first & see what it says about getting it online & ordering DW. Oh and OD is a bit cheaper and I always FEEL rich its just when the bills come I`m reminded I`m never as rich as I feel :) More a case of " I can`t have spent THAT much"
What you going to do Sara?
Thanks everyone

Christine - I am just as confused as I was at the start of this thread lol ;) :D :D
I would love to get both and if we had newspaper deliveries here I'd maybe get both but as I can't be sure to be able to get to the papershop each week I want to subscribe and paying out for 2 subscriptions at once is just toooooo much.
I think I'll get both for a couple of weeks and then make my choice but at the minute DW has the edge :) I may consider doing a 6mths subscription online for OD as well and use hubbys credit card details for that ;)
I didn't ought to take too long about it as hopefully there will be a critique for Phoebie in one very soon I'm eager to see as it will be hers and my first ever :)
Sara :D

I get both papers, but if I were only getting one it would definitely be DW - far more informative and useful as far as columns/articles go, although think breed notes & write-ups will be more or less the same in both.
I actually like both papers so therefore buy both papers. I get them delivered and they usually arrive on a Thursday, or a Friday at the latest. :-) One thing I have noticed in both papers though is the number of spelling mistakes, missed words, incorrect words. Anyone else notice this? It's very frustrating sometimes :-(

I always seemed to spend more time reading my "Second Hand" DW than I did my "Second Hand" OD. If I had to chose it would be DW every day.

I couldn't make up my mind, so I get both too...:D :D
Well reading through the above it seems Dog World has more Champdog readers / writers than Our Dogs.
We used to get both but now only the one, so like many others there then.
Andrew Brace writes for Dog World so if he is your ideal author then that is the one for you.
Frank Jackson and Robert Killick write for Our Dogs so if thats your bag then thats the one.
Our breed notes writer in OD is (edited for libel) and the breed note writer in DW is (also edited for libel)
(BTW the above is a joke and MUST NOT to be taken seriously as both have been consistent in their reporting and brought many relevant and thought producings points to the fore and are well respected in the breed. In fact one is judging our Ch show later in the year)
We just prefer OD
By gwen
Date 16.08.02 18:45 UTC

Noticed that OD are increasing the show reports to include 3rd place - dont think this will sway anyone, but its not often either comes up with an innovation.
Gwen

Well I get OD and my sister-in-law gets DW so we read and swap :D .Gillian

I get both but really enjoy DW best but breed notes in OD are better and much more regular so I'm stuck I know one of the people that does the notes in OD so wonder if I could persuade her to email me copy of them Anne
So I take it no one else has noticed the numerous typo's that appear in both papers then ? Either that or you naughty buggers didn't read my posting LOL :D

Hi Claire
Yes I have noticedd, but find that the mos t glarring mostooks are in OD.
I've lost count of the number of expressions that are decribed as 'apalling' when I think they really mean appealing!!
It rally is mosst offputting!

lol Liz :D
The best one I have is when my girl won the daily qualifying
heat of PetPlan Junior stakes class at 3cos ch show.
Her name is totally incorrect (the website is correct for the show results)
But DW had her down as correctly owned but the name was a male dog
of the same breed, but wasn't even exhibited in the stakes classes (he's too old for Junior).
I have kept the critique, at least I can laugh about it :)

I have had the same experience recently with Our Dogs, but at least they named my bitches mother as the winner! They did appologise in the breed notes, but unfortunately overcompensated crediting her with the Group, rather than Group Two!

I also get both papers delivered from my local newsagent.
As a breed note writer in Dog World I have to agree with Leigh about being 'restricted' to what is printed. My notes are e-mailled, when I have something to write. But they are sometimes edited or not printed.
Having written breednotes for over 10 years I get a bit stale unless I
have show results or news to report.
I prefer Dog World overall.

Pam

Date 16.08.02 21:19 UTC
Thank you Pam :D not that I have had much to say for myself lately. A rare event
I read yours too!

I think that most people don't realise that we are restricted to the show results that we can mention in Dog World, and with a breed that doesn't have CCs or classes at all the champ shows, there are times in the show calender where there is not news to report!
People let you know they were best of breed, and or won the group at little some such show, and when it isn't mentioned, don't give you any more news!
You always get feedback if you get something wrong though :D
Sometimes i try to bait them all a bit!
By gwen
Date 17.08.02 08:22 UTC

Dont I know it, people send you details of say, Best Puppy at an open show, and cant understand why it does not appear - regardless how much you explain the rules!
Gwen

Yes i always explain, but they always have that disbelieving lok on their faces,or tone in the voice, LOl!

LOL ..me too, but the only *reaction* I get is no one talks to me ... ROTFL
Pam - you haven't run across Poole Open Show writeups in either have you? I've got DW and haven't seen it - and it's been quite a while now. As our win will likely not happen again it would be nice to see a write up on Savvy to put on her board.
Thanks

Been talking to my breeder about trying to decide which to get and she has DW - so I'll be doing the same as Tina :) I'll subscribe to OD and do a swap with the breeder :D
Took alot of thinking to get to that easy answer lol :D Sometimes the things most obvious are easy to overlook ;)
