See here :-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/gallery/gallery_dogs_names.shtmlThe owners of these dogs should be locked up in a tin box, with no fresh air or water for the same length of time that it took this poor dog to die - multiplied by 4, because they had four dogs in the car.
There is no excuse for this behaviour these days - there are enough notices, shows are giving out announcements all the time.
It just plain thoughtlessness - which leads to cruelty of the worst kind - the owners just
didn't think about their dogs.

That is a story about dogs names???

:( There needs to be some well publicised punishment doled out to people continuing to do this.

Poor, poor dogs. :( If
only it was better publicised that the Royal Show is one of the few at Stoneleigh that doesn't allow dogs in.

If you just turn up to attend there's no way of knowing that you can't take your dog/s in with you. And there's not the equivalent of the 'unentered dogs' tent. Perhaps the RSPCA should suggest that.

I cannot understand after all the publicity of previous deaths why people leave their dogs in cars.
I do think that shows should be more proactive and tell people not to leave their dogs in the cars, print it in their leaflets and with the media coverage given to this current heatwave I'm sure there could have been a way to get this message across on TV etc

IMO these shows should have attendants patrolling the carparks and looking for dogs who are left in cars. The owners should be given ten mins (providing the dog is reasonably ok) to return to the car to be escorted from the show to take their dogs HOME - or the car should be broken into and the owners prosecuted for cruelty.
There is NO EXCUSE for such utter, utter stupidity - people who do this shouldn't be in charge of a car - let alone one with a dog roasting alive inside it. I hope they feel utter, wretched guilt for a VERY LONG TIME
I actually and am at this moment working at the Royal as I work on the showground. I have to say that the Royal Website does say Dogs are not allowed. However even if they were. What mad people would drag their dogs around in this heat?
I'm very lucky that I have understanding employers who have, if i'm stuck, let me bring the dogs in to the office which is nice and cool for them. Luckily I have a great friend who looks after them for me during the show. Anyone that shows knows the heat at some shows. I have not gone to some champ shows as I deemed it too hot for the dogs, and sometimes even though I enjoy the social day out i've gone to the show, spent an hour and headed for home. At least there we do have marquees that give some shading. Most showgrounds have very little shade provided.
I'm fed up to the back teeth of stories like this and as for dog shows. Every show it happens. The Kennel club should do there part working with Show societies and hit these people where it hurts and put a fixed ban in place. As for the general public leaving dogs in cars, more should be done to prosecute. I don't care what the law says, if I saw a dog in this heat not looking good, they'd be a brick going through the car window and I'd deal with the consequences afterwards.

I agree. It amazes me that people drag their pet dogs along to village fetes in blazing sun in the middle of June/July and make them endure companion classes for the waggiest tail. The things that dogs put up with.

Yesterday at Windsor, the temperatures were horrendous. It still didn't stop the tannoy announcement for the owners of 2 Black Labradors left in a car to go back to them, then another announcement for two Dalmations then again about 20 minutes later for the 2 Black Labradors again. It was so hot by 9.30 , I wouldn't have left my dogs in the car even with all the windows open. When is somebody going to take proper action and ban these idiots from showing, no excuses, just ban them. There was even an unentered dog tent there so absolutely no excuses. As to that show at Stoneleigh, if I had taken my dogs and found they couldn't go in, then I would have turned around and not gone in myself.

There's no excuse for leaving dogs in a car in this heat

OMHO the people who do this should have a thick, real fur coat superglued to them and then sit in the car in the same heat for the same length of time
It totally amazes me that some dog owners don't seem to understand the suffering of dogs in cars on hot days, but then they're probably the same ones I see dragging their poor dogs around between 11am and 5pm

Owner in t-shirt and shorts, dog in full fur coat and tongue on the floor, unbelievable!
>dog in full fur coat
The self-same full fur coat that insulates from both heat
and cold. ;) It's the poor dogs that are clipped short and lose that insulation that I feel sorry for. :(

JG - In theory you're right :) but most around these parts are clipped and/or matted :( :( of the others, many are bull type breeding (usually staffy/crosses, some bulldogs) and seem very stressed by being dragged round in the heat :( these are also dogs that aren't normally walked at this time, the owners are just out for the sun
Interestingly, the people who would normally be walking at these times are waiting till it's cooler or going out really early to beat the heat ;)

Its not just the heat of the day, but the ground is so so hot.....what about the poor dogs feet on the burning tarmac?? People never seem to realise that. It makes me so angry......I too was at Windsor yesterday and was horrified to hear these announcements about dogs being left in cars. When are the kennel club going to do something about it?.

My friend's stepmum made a similar comment to that the other day - I was telling her how I'd spent ten minutes trying to persuade my brother not to walk his dog (this is at noon, the garden was too hot for her, nevermind a walk - and she throws herself around the whole way), and she said her vet would say to people "okay, you want to walk your dog at this time of day - off you go, take your shoes and socks off first - oh, and here, put this coat on. Now go and see how much you enjoy it."
Perhaps there should be a warning on the tickets/ticket hotlines about dogs in cars - something saying that they won't be allowed into the show, or that dogs left in cars will be removed to safety and the owners fined. Something along those lines. I still find it amazing that people do it, considering all the warnings that are kicking about - but then, there are some astoundingly dim people owning dogs these days.
Stupid, stupid, stupid, these people need some sort of prosecution, what a terrible way to die, I agree they need locking in a car in the heat for an hour to see just what their poor dogs went through. Why are there still people out there who can't seem to understand what happens to a car in the heat? The poor dogs, it must have been terrible for them.
It makes me so mad that dogs are still losing their lives in cars

47 degrees in the one car the whippet died in, that's horrendous. I was at a gundog event yesterday (just watching a friend) and was horrified at the way the dogs were taken in the heat of the day to a large field with the hot sun pelting down on them all (and there were quite a lot of dogs working so many waited for a long time). I know it was outside but the dogs were very hot. I found it unbearable in the shade. One human got heatstroke in spite of wearing a hat and keeping in the shade once in woodland, etc.
Owners who leave dogs in hot cars need leaving in the cars themselves for a bit, i agree!

I cant believe it :(
I left Beano in my car today while i went into the vets, at 6.30 at night for 10 minutes, car turned so he was in the shade, windows open and me looking out of the vets full length windows watching him apart from the 5 minutes I was in with the vet, and at that time it had cooled down ALOT and he was perfectly fine. And I still felt guilty that he was in there when I knew it was not hot in the car. I cannot believe anyone would leave any dogs in cars in this heat.
I spent the day hiding in the shade whenever I could and drank over 2 litres of water, which is unheard of for me. And the van wondows were open all day and when it was stood, It was still sealtering when we got into it.
My car when I got into it at 5 was swealtering. and I had all 4 windows open on the way home. How can anyone leave dogs in cars and think they will be ok :( :( :(
Lea :(
I just cant understand this type of person. Why can't they just leave the dog at home on days like this, that are so hot, if they cant then dont go out, its as simple as that to me. i love my kids and family life, the dogs form part of this and there is no way I would expect them to be dragged round in the heat anywhere. During these hot days they go out the back to relieve themselves, then just lye out on the stone kitchen floor (their choice rather than beds) near the fan. They have a run at 6am and 9pm onwards. I am lucky in having ground of my own, I know some cant do this. But to leave a dog in a hot car....

....there is no excuse. As someone has already said, if I turned up at a show/event where they were not allowed to walk with us I would go home too, no way would they be left in a car. There is so much advertising these days about this, why oh why do idiots still do it. If anyone deserves to be put in prison for a spell then these people do.

But they LOVE their dogs, don't want to leave them at home on their own .......
Margot

Those are the ones who say "But my dog's like my child ..."
well, i wouldnt subject my child to intense heat and i wouldnt leave them in a hot car (amazing how many do when nipping to the shops, just popping inside for a loaf etc, kids OK in child seat....yet the car gets so hot so fast) but I take your point re holidays, if the dog comes too then it has to stay with the family, and go where they do.

People who've taken their dogs on holiday with them don't have a choice - wherever they go, the dog has to go too.
Even though it is illegal to leave dogs in cars, WHAT do the do to them?
It happens all the time.
There should be warnings up saying £1000.00 fine, they would not do it then!
Then they should choose more sensible places to go, which don't involve leaving a dog in a car......
(Edited to say, not getting at you Jeangenie - I read this back and it looked like I was - sorry).
Saw on the news again last night that another dog was left in the car at the Royal. They actually filmed the whole thing showing the massive temperature rise in just one hour. After the dog had vomitted the RSPCA man decided to intervene. The owners came back and it was unbelieveable. He thought he was being perfectly responsible and didn't see the problem at all. IDIOT
I thought I would let everyone know more about the death of this whippet, although it doesn't seem 5 years ago. I was actually attending the show to see my son in Kings Troop, I got back to the car park and whilst having a picnic spotted somebody squirting water into a bowl in the BMW through a one inch gap in the window, when they saw me looking they left quickly, when I went to the car the dog was just a mess on the seats, it was pretty close to death. There was nothing to break the window so I ran back to the entrance and the RSPCA was alerted.
There are 3 facts not mentioned in any news report was that I had been in that car park for over half an hour before spotting the dog, at no time was an rspca vehicle or anyone patrolling the car park, the RSPCA took over 10 minutes to arrive despite being on site and when I phoned the police later to find the outcome I was told if I had of broken the window I would have been arrested, would that have stopped me, no way.
It's not the first or last time that I've been involved in dog rescues, the last major time was last Christmas on my way to my sisters I came over a blind hill to find cars swerving round a Japanese Akita wandering up and down the middle of the road, I pulled the car over, hazards on and yellow jacket on, the Akita finally came to the side of the road, I grabbed its collar and held on knee deep in mud. I tried to phone the owner but it was a mobile answer phone, now I can tell you holding a powerful dog and phoning and texting is fun. I phoned the police and whilst waiting noticed movement in the woods, it was a very injured Staff looking close to death but suprisingly after a few minutes it crawled and laid with its head on my knee.
The police arrived and the dogs wouldn't go unless I took them to the van, we carried the Staff on a blanket. It was only then that the owner rang, I passed the phone to the police for reasons you can guess
Outcome was the Staff did recover from injuries, it seems the owner often let them roam, further action is pending

Sunday late pm after a hot day in the South East I passed a parked, small narrow type van parked in the shade in a lane with large dog inside no windows open at all. There was no one around so I cycled home (only a few minutes away) and rang the police asking them to check the vehicle. I do not know if they did but I certainly hope so. Why do people take risks with their dogs? The owner most likely thought parked in the shade was ok and no need to open windows - they will learn when it too late and their pet is long dead.
HERE WE GO AGAIN!! Poor, poor dogs but until a suitable punishment is dished out this is still going to happen.

We are on holiday at the moment with three labs and it is very hot. They are never left lone in the car all windows open whenever going slowly or at traffics lights and whenever we stop they are out the car either in the shade if not walking any where and are given plenty of fresh water where ever we go. Luckily here in the forest of Dean the area is very dog friendly and so we can take them to most places. There is no excuse for leaving a dog no matter how short a time in a car in warm weather. If you can't keep them with you at all times leave them at home .

To see the poor dogs being dragged around the New Forest Show last week, many on the point of collapse in the searing heat, made me so wild that I didn't stay very long. What pleasure do these morons think that their dogs get from a day out at an event like this and why are they allowed to do it? I think it has to become the norm that dogs are not allowed in these shows, boot sales or to be left in cars. Many more will die before this happens.

It really is dreadful..I worry about my dogs being too hot in the home having fans on for thier comfort or where they lie outside checking all the time that they are in the shade and when you think how many times you re - fill thier bowls its obvious they are feeling the heat.. we do not walk the dogs if it is too hot and just a short walk in the evening when it has been hot during the daytime because I feel what we may think is cool is possibly still to warm for them ..as they will go wherever you want them to automatically.

Watching the local news I was heartened to see that a woman had been prosecuted for leaving her three very small children in a hot car. She seemed to think it would be ok as she had left one of the windows "open a tad and only intended to be gone a minute"! The alarm was raised when the oldest child (8 years old) started repeatedly blowing the horn and people went to their rescue. The temperature inside my car yesterday was 29.5 degree's. I doubt leaving the window "open a tad" would have made any difference at all. It sickens me to see dogs (and children) left in cars and yet even now with all the media coverage it still happens. What is the matter with people :(
I think common sense has well and truly left many people today.
It wouldn't matter if the window was even half way open, it's the breeze that cools you down when a car is moving or air con is on, sitting stationary on a hot day your just cooking in a car, I don't get it either, why people don't understand. :-(
Maybe it needs to be included in part of the driving test how dangerous it is to leave anything living in a car on a hot day, so that they remember it, these people would probably remove a pint of milk from a car with a window left open knowing it would go off, but it doesn't click what it would do to something/one alive. :-(
I am always shocked (and disgusted) at how many people of all nationalities regularly drag their small size dogs around the frantically busy markets in temperatures in excess of 30 degrees. I can´t believe the dogs are actually enjoying it and many look to be in danger of being trodden on by people who just aren´t looking out for little dogs. My lad doesn´t like being left at home alone but I know he´d be a whole lot less happy if I tried taking him to the market with me.

how she has got these children back beggars belief...... she stated she went to the pawn shop to trade something in to get cash to buy food for her kids, since she has other charges over her head we can only assume the money was not for food, makes me sick thinking about this, i know of this person and believe me shes not fit to have her children....how she did not get a more severe sentence really has me stumped

I do hope there weren't too many dogs stuck in cars with their owners on the M25 closure, said to be 7 hours due to a horrific accident.

I onced sneeked my budgie into moristons one day as he had been with me to work and i needed to get some bread for my mum, so i put him in a cardboard box (with holes) and took him in with me and hoped he wouldnt start chirping. Then had someone offer to buy him for £1 when they saw him on my sholder in the car park as i had to wait out side with him while the fan cooled the car down again for him. ok it took me longer to get the bread but he was safe and thats what mattes.
I think that some people just do whats easyer for them with out thinking of the animal.

I was sitting on the M25 yesterday for 1 hour when I decided it was getting too hot for my little dog who was in her crate. It was baking hot and the traffic not moving so I turned off and found somewhere to take her out for a little breather!
How you can leave your dog in the car on sunny days and think it's OK because a window is open is ridiculous. I was so hot sitting in the traffic (not moving) with windows fully open!
I must say it makes me mad to see cars and van on Ch Show carparks with dogs in (doors and windows open)! Why bring the dogs if you know you will have to leave them in the van/car? Every year at Windsor Ch Show you hear the call for people to remove the dogs from their car... some people will never learn and certainly do not care about their dogs!

Lol at Jo and the budgie
My friend used to sneak her Border Terrier puppy Bruce into the Co-op stuffed into her coat, she got some funny looks when this wee fuzzy head would pop out from between her bosoms lol, but she always got away with it.
