Hi everyone,
My mate does a bit of fishing, he just rang me and offered me fresh makerel. I give them (my dogs) a sardine (out of a tin) in their food every 2nd day. Just wondering would the fish have to be gutted and the bones removed, i would be worried about them choking on a bone.
He says that he can give it to me on a regular basis. Your thoughts please.

If you can mince the fish it should be ok. Not that I know whether mackerel is ok, just saying if you mince it then all the bones will be small. My dogs enjoy raw minced fish :)
I give my lot whole fresh fish couple of times a wk :) whole as in not gutted, head on etc

:D

Be warned that you may be revisited by the mackerel though :D

One of mine eats raw fish but it never stays down the other is fine

My first experience of feeding raw mackerel was not pleasant....regurgitated raw fish
everywhere!!
Since then, they have been fine eating whole (head/tail/bones etc) raw fish (including mackerel) and they have it about twice a week :)
mine regurgitated mackerel the first time so I got the fishmonger to remove the guts and cut them into three so they got a smaller portion and same thing happened. They don't like being sick, makes them very miserable :-( I give them sardines raw instead and have no problems whatsover, I did recently try herring and it had a worse reaction than the mackerel!

I'm sure they hadn't eaten THAT much during the day. I stick with the sardines now as I know they can eat those and have no trouble, far better than having three dogs moping around because they've been sick:rolleyes:

Yes :D :D :D
(I've given up giving raw fish - they just get pilchards/sardines in tomato sauce now :D - much easier )

I think I might be resorting to the tinned fish again rather than raw as they have been having that normally. The house stinks like Billingsgate Market

:D :D

I have given them to my dogs when they were sold off at the end of the day in Sainsbury's, though they were gutted.

My dog spat out raw squid the other day. You could have knocked me down with a feather! She usually eats anything and loves all other fishy things. Don't know if it was the texture or what?

Mine love squid :) The only fish they have turned their nose up at is Ling which is a white fish but they'll eat pretty much anything else.

I feed my dogs raw fish regularly when it is cheap, sardines, mackeral, herring etc.
Be warned some dogs like to reacquaint themselves with it at some point in time, usually somewhere where you cannot get the stench out! ;) :D
Some dogs never manage it. I buy mine gutted already but feed whole, fish bones are not going to bother most dogs who can easily manage much bigger ones with no probs.

Just don't fry it first! :D

My girl loves fish of any kind but she has a problem keeping raw fish down, so I lightly steam it, guts and all, she also has a good drink from the fishy stock.:)

We go fishing regulary like today and caught 21 mackerel we bbq'ed 6 and the dogs get the rest raw, mackerel is plentiful down here for now :D i do gut them and take the heads/tails off rinse in fresh water and feed directly.
They did at 1st regurgiatate it on a regular basis but now they don't and get fed it when we can catch it.

Neatly in my mothers handbag once, and into an inaccesible part of the carpet in the back of the car..... mother sold the car.

Perfectly fine, however if you are apprehensive, try tinned sardines/mackeral/pilchards first.
