Jackie, Gwen or someone LOL

Can one of you tell me what the correct rule is for:

If I am at an open show and there is only and open for my breed and I am showing my puppy does he have to be entered in the breed open class to be shown in AV puppy or can I just enter him in AV puppy?

I was told by one person yes which is what I thought was correct and another said NO the pup has to go in the breed class but I cannot see the rules clearly anywhere at all.

I had him in his breed class at the weekend as I was told to but he is only 6 months so I thought he should only be in AV puppy only.

It would be stupid to have a 6 month old puppy in with a 4 year old dog.It would need to be an ugly dog ..

thanks

Pam

Hi
as i understand the rules, if there is a breed class for a paticular breed then the dog/bitch MUST be entered in this class irrespective of age if there is only one class (open usually), if you want to enter any AV class.
If there is no breed class then obviously you can enter into any AV class that your dog/bitch may be eligable to enter.
As i said, this is only as I understand it.
I could be wrong (wouldnt be suprised :))
Im sure someone else will correct me if im wrong.

It may be worth ringing the Show Secretary of the show to get their opinion

This is not so. Puppies do not have to go in the breed if there is no breed puppy clas, and can go in AV, but not AVNSC puppy (the not seperately classified refers to breed). Also Veterans do not have to go in breed classes.

Thanks Brainless that is what I thought... I have a show this weekend but I will tell them when I get there that I want to with draw him as in Saturday he was in the ring with 3 older dogs and 2 were really good dogs.

I am Ok with the rules now and the classes etc and where and why they should be where but there are always wee things that crop up. Thanks for answering so quite Zigger and Brainless...( Still don't like calling you that) :-)

Pam, don't withdraw, it wont hurt your puppy to get used to being in the ring and if there are no other puppies in the class you are still an unbeaten puppy, & best puppy in breed and can go forward to group or BPIS ring. You can go forward from any class because the rules say any unbeaten puppy and it does not specify which classes it has to have been in, unless you have a puppy class in your breed, then you must do that. You can't go into AVNSC if you have breed classes but with a pup that is about the only rule. If you are in a open class and their are say 3 unplaced puppies, the judge should call you back into the ring and declare a best puppy from the puppies, this will not happen if a puppy was placed in the line up as they are then the best puppy. Bet that is as clear as mud. Jackie

Pam, If I understand you rightly you have entered him is breed open and any variety puppy? In that case I don't think you can withdraw from breed open and still do AV puppy. If you withdraw from any class you are considered to have withdrawn completely, you cannot go on and do further classes. Only exception is if you have won BOB or BPIB when you can withdraw from variety classes in order to remail unbeaten to challenge for BIS.

The wording on different the first part of an open show schedule I have in front of me (definitions of classes) says :

A dog is not eligible for entry in variety classes unless also entered and subsequently exhibited in a breed class, where such a class is provided for which it is eligible.
Exemptions from this rule are :
A puppy, unless a class for dogs under 12 months of age for which it is eligible is provided for the breed.

Reading that I'd presume that if there is NO puppy class in your breed you can still enter an AV puppy class. HOWEVER once you have entered a breed class of any type I'm not sure how easy it is to withdraw from that - doesn't appear to be easy ?? The bit Jackie talks about experience and unbeaten puppy makes sense anyway so I'd still go for it.
Otherwise a call to the secretary may be in order.

Sara :)

Pam off track a bit but needs watching, someone who has say 2 puppies may enter 1 in puppy and 1 in Junior or even open. You win puppy and think oh good we have won BPIB only to find that the other persons pup that was in junior or may be open and was unplaced will still be called into the ring to challenge your puppy for the best pup award.
Can be disapointing, particulaly if you think the person has put the pup in the higher class just to remain unbeaten. Have seen people with only one pup chose to put the pup in higher classes, who knows why, but they do. Ja:)kie

I have put my puppy in at say novice or junior at Champ
shows. But thats because she had done her growing upwards
and looked completely out of place she towered everything :)
Now however she doesn't look so huge (she's a junior).
So there can be logical reason for placing them in the slightly
higher classes.
However I kept her in the puppy classes at open show level
as then I didn't qualify out of the novice class at ch show level
too quickly ;)

Thanks Jackie,

I think that is what happen with my bitch once but can't remember all the exact dertails but remember being shouted back in the ring as the only dog that had beat my bitch was an older so she won the puppy group but that was nto intentional by me..

I think the open shows are worse to decide about that the champs but Just in inexperienced opinion.

Thanks all.

As I understand it you cannot withdraw from breed classes, once already entered, but you con't have to enter in the breed, if there is no puppy class provided.

usually I show my pups in av terrier puppy, the only time they are in a breed class is maybe at the club open show. or if there are two westie classes i.e. junior or graduate then open I dont show them in open till they are a bit older
