Topic Dog Boards / General / Living In or Out?

When talking to some friends the other day we were speculating on why our dogs seem to take ages to get back their coat after moulting, we thought perhaps those dogs that lived outdoors in a kennel got theirs back a lot quicker which got me thinking(maybe not such a good idea!!) If you have outdoor dogs do you have others that live in and how do you decide who lives in or out? Do you split their time indoors and out? My 2 are most certainly sofa, tv and comfy bed dogs, but I wonder if others would prefer the outdoors?
Thanks
Angela

Mine are the same, sofa and TV, but do sleep out, so that gives them at least 8 hours of natural temperatures and fresh air.

I also keep the kitchen unheated for them.

Oh dear, that would be like asking me to choose between my children  Making dogs live outside purely because it may make their coats grow back in quicker is deplorable to me :(  And seems to be solely for the owners benefits, not the dogs

I can say with all certainty that my dogs would not survive living outside, they would stress out so much and be so miserable that they would inevitably get sick and who knows what would happen from there.

I was only just talking about outside dogs with hubby the other night, and i told him that it was practically an unheard of thing nowadays,i honestly believed this to be true?? Do people still house their dogs outside, and is it common?

I know plenty of people whose dogs sleep in outside accommodation, this is for their health and benefit, as our centrally heated houses are not an ideal environment for them.

Mind you I do own a breed that prefers it cool :D  Maybe that is why my back door is open all year round except in the foulest of weather, my family say that I live in a dog kennel, oh well..

In the day time though the sofa or chairs are their preferred places, especially cuddled up with an obliging Hume.

My boys are in kennels through the day and sleep indoors at night - the girls have the dog yard and utility room through the day and sleep indoors too. If I'm around through the day then all the dogs mooch around with me but I don't let them have the run of the house when I'm not here to supervise.

My boys love their kennels and even when they have the choice to go in or out they generally like to spend part of the day in 'their' dens - in this hot weather  most of the dogs like to sleep outside ( I have a dog flap so they have access to both areas). The only exception is Louis who likes to sleep upstairs with us - it's his special privilege as 'top dog' :D
