my boxer likes to lye on the bare concrete when it is hot out in the yard. i have dog beds, blankets scattered in several places but he isnt intrested. as a result he is rubbing the hair of his chest down to just the pink skin. it isnt sore and it isnt implamed or cut, the hair is just getting rubbed out from the friction.

he is very big for a boxer, a lot bigger than all the adult boxers round here and he is only 11 months old. i dont know if this makes a diffrence.

any ideas as to what i can do to stop the problem?

Not sure what you can do except perhaps a very light weight t-shirt in the house if it isnot too hot.

I have seen many labs and other breeds with this type of things on their elbows and they just turn into very hard and sometimes black skin.
Sorry not much help but the t-shirt may help

A little late now (it's winter here) but if it warms up again how about putting a wet towel in the freezer. Pull it out for him to lay on and cool off when it's hot (you can thank HG for that tip. I saw it on one of her posts)

You say that the hair loss is due to friction. This implies that the dog somehow moves its chest in a horizontal motion across the concrete. Is this likely? It may be coincidental with something else. Is the dog on any medication? My boxer had a reaction to Rimadyl and lost his hair. Also...

I don't want to worry you but did you know that cement and concrete dust can cause lung damage such as chronic bronchitis, silicosis and cancer, and that skin contact can cause an allergic reaction, which may be what you are seeing? The cement element of concrete contains hazardous substances such as silica, lime, gypsum, nickel, cobalt and chromium compounds. The lime element is responsible for burns, rashes and other skin irritations. Cement dust can also cause eye irritations.

If concrete dust is present or the concrete is old, have it sealed.

Do you mean the hair under his belly, from his chest to his waist line, this is not because he is laying on the cold floor, i dont know why but it is quite normal in a Boxer for them to loose some hair on their under carriage as the get older, I  have 2 Boxers, my little girl she is 3yrs old has hardly any hair on her under carriage,(she looks and feels like a Mexican hairless) and my boy who is 7, does not have much at all, you can see all the pigmented skin on their bellies.......... I am not sure why they loose this hair, but I do know of many a Boxer with the same problem ( not really a problem)    but if you are worried a trip to the vets will put your mind at rest and rule out  any  other cause, I.E  Cushings, Thyroid, Allergies
