Does anyones breed clubs do health surveys throughout their membership? if so, and there is an "eye" survey, would anyone please be able to tell me what percentage of their breed is recorded as having an "eye problem". This is not a witch hunt nor is it specific to a particular breed, I am simply researching the approximate percentage of dogs within a breed recorded as having eye problems in a breed club survey, so that our breed club can get an idea of what is a good % & what is a bad %. This will help us in deciding whether we are o the right or wrong side of "healthy" & the future direction of our breed so any help, or even pointers to another website, would be gratefully received.

The Kennel Club did something a couple of years ago conducted by the Animal Health Trust I believe.  Have you asked them for help with these statistics?  The trouble with asking on a message board is you are then dealing with hearsay.  Maybe a better idea would be a mail drop to the health committee of the breed clubs, there is only a couple of hundred of them ;) or narrowed down to the ones who you think may be relevent to your research ie those listed in the Accredited Breeder Scheme as requiring testing under the BVA/KC eye scheme which is only about 50.

The Flatcoat Society are in the process of collecting replies from a general health survey sent out to members earlier in the year.

Not so much interested in hearsay! I was hoping that, like my breed, other breeds have done these surveys themselves,& printed results in their breed club publications etc & it would be prettty straight forward to just have a look at them....like ours.

leos have yearly eye tests, results are printed on a regular basis in our newsletters :) along with hips/elbow scores. The newsletter is also repeated on our club website I think, so non members can read it :)

Surely if your breed are tested under the BVA/KC/ISDS scheme all results should be printed in the breed record supplements, therefore you can gather accurate pass and failures rates of those tested.

With any breed you cannot do an accurate survey as no breed club can guarantee that all breeders and owners are going to test, and neither can you guarantee that all breeders and owners even if they do test will be happy to pass on health information.

Any health committee is only as good as it's committee and if the people on the committee are likely to pass on information then breeders and owners are even less likely to participate.

Sorry I thought you meant percentage of dogs in your breed affected or clear of eye problems.

However what I say still stands in as much as the BVA and KC do publish the results of all breeds, they also publish the number of diseases which affect every breed. The list can be found on the KC and BVA web sites.

Percentages will vary greatly from breed to breed, simply because some breeds have been working tirelessly to try to eradicate problems while others have only just discovered they have a problem to solve. The breed with the most problems listed is probably going to be the golden retriever, but then when you look at their pass / fail rates their percentage of affected dogs is very low, compared to the number tested.

You do have to remember that in an average litter there will be one or two show or working prospects selected by a breeder and the rest will go into pet homes and therefore be highly unlikely to get tested at all.

thanks for info Polly,  Multiocular defects?????   suppose i wll now have to trawl all breed club sites for all those breeds in hope that they have done surveys which reveal % of owners questioned who have experienced eye problems (as that is essentially what I need to establish)

Dachsies are to be tested for PRA before they are used for breeding,this started early 2005. I have a clear bitch and waiting for kit to test my male.

Breed clubs won't advertise pups of untested dogs.

KC now adds results to registration documents.

Yep Spanish are tested for G and mny of us have had our dogs done.  I am now coming to the thinking that we were just extremely unfortunate with two of our first imports, dog with glaucoma originated from them but their offspring before we knew we had  problem were mated with other dogs who must hve been clear.  We are now getting clears nd very low scoring dogs.  Dogs being imported now re also clear.

Don't know, but I have a feeling that in our breed this has already run it's course, the two dogs were only mated once together.  I'm hoping thata this is so but of course will always test breeding dogs to ensure this.

We always include all the BRS report in our year book every year, so you can see at a glance which dogs were eye tested, and hip scored, as well as all the registraions, transfers, CC's, champions made up, Stud book qualifiers, JW, ShCM winners etc.

Also all the CC show results to fourth place in each class.
