hi all
i am a little worried about giving the kennel cough vac to mollie who is ten i have appointment tomorrow are there side affects and as lil is not getting it is she at risk  should i keep them apart because mollie will have gotten the vaccination therefore will have some in her system

mollie is going to kennels while i am in usa and lil is going back to her breeder

i am also worried about mollies reaction to vet as she is very tempermental i will warn him in advance she is not going to be happy

Does the kennel demand it, many don't?  It is not a very pleasant experience especially if they don't like the vet and will not protect fully so, personally, I would not bother unless the kennel demand it which is usually if local vets advise due to particular strains in the area.  As far as the shedding issue there is no comment on the Intervet site regarding this in the KC vaccine only for the Parvo vaccine that I can see where it says

>The canine parvovirus vaccine strain may be shed at very low levels for up to 8 days after inoculation.  However there is no evidence of any reversion to virulence of the vaccine strain and therefore no need to separate unvaccinated dogs from contact with recently vaccinated individuals.

Georgina, There are different types of innoculation for Kennel Cough (I believe, unless I've understood this wrong - I've never used it for my own) - most of them are intranasal ones which are not very pleasant, but there are also jabs which are given as injections in the usual way and are probably more pleasant.

Georgina, have you thought about trying another kennels?  There must be others that don't insist on kennel cough jab and take care of them better than the one you experienced; or maybe someone you know could take care of her?

I always thought there were several strains of KC but only one injection to protect againt one strain, leaving the wide open tbh.

Hi my girl, the injection vax is for parainfluenza, the nasal one is for both parainfluenza & bordatella, both can cause kennel cough.

Parainfluenza is in the combi vax that the majority of dogs receive as pups & then 3 yearly boosters but as its also contained in the nasal vax, dogs given the k/c vax receive a double dose of it!!

Hiya G, yes the intranasal vax does shed, according to Intervets datasheet, link below. And yes there are side effects, as there are with all vaccines :)

>>>Reduction of shedding of B. bronchiseptica has been shown from 3 months after vaccination<<<
