Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My Dog refuses to eat... help

Please help

I recently accquired a CKCS, bit of a rescue case... not going into to many details. To cut along story short she is not used to human contact as has spent her life mainly in kennels(not mine)... i brought her to my home and have nursed her to great health... i have a few dogs here and her health and timidness have improved.

The problem arose when i moved house and one of the neighbours complained about Rosie (CKCS) barking... i appreciated this complaint and as my mum was living on her own and really loved Rosie i decided the only course of action to save Rosie was to let her move into my mums.

That was 5 days ago and Rosie still refuses to eat. i have tried every thing... i think... i have even brought her back here to eat with her friends, all to no avail. ive checked her teeth and gums and they appear fine. Rosie is still playful, no temp, drinks plenty... Im at a loss... any tips for a worried owner would be greatly appreciated.

hi there,

OK now I've heard of this before. Do you leave food all over the house for her? If so, stop!! you need to establish a routine with her again, so she can have some sort of normality now that she has been moved. If she refuses to eat when you place her food down, pick it back up again and try a little bit later. This might help. There was a case where the owners of a small dog left food all over the house and the poor thing nearly starved to death. This must be worth a try!! :) Good luck!!

It's really difficult to suggest anything, not being able to see Rosie etc, but i guess shs could possibly be pining ....???

Is her new owner maybe feeding her where she is scared of a strange noise? Has her diet been changed? Is it wetter or drier - any gravy put on it, or leftovers Rosie isn't sure about?

It is usually best to put donw food and then take it away after about 10 minutes if not eaten, that way the dog values the food more.

It may be worth tempting the dog with some really special food, I know this may lead to the dog getting fussy for a little while, but at least then you know she will eat, andcan then maybe add a little of this to her normal food til she is eating normally again.

It does seem from what you have said that Rosien not eating is linked to her move, so try and find what is different .....if she seem shealthy and happy she is hopefully fine, but if she hasn't eaten for quite a few days take her to the vet just for a checkup, as ill health could be coinciding with her refusal to eat.

Final thought, does her new home have any dogs? As she may be used to "competition" when eating and if she now no longer has it.....

Hi IHS, don`t think its this really but would just like to mention it. 1 of my dogs stopped eating last wk, very unusual, gave her good check up & couldn`t find anything wrong. 2 days later thought give another check before maybe taking her to the vet & found on the roof of her mouth a small cut that was on the side way back that I had missed. That was why she wouldn`t eat but it cleared up and she got back to eating again.
Hope she starts eating soon.

I think you've hit the nail on the head when you mentioned pining. She eats the same at my mums because ive provided all her food and at the same time. My mum has no other dogs and lives in a quiet area... me thinks she misses my other dogs and the hustle and bustle of life in my home. Been to vets this morning, absolutley no illness/temp whatsoever, do i leave her and be patient?

Any advice please help...

PS ive tried to tempt her with all her fav foods and so far nothing does the trick...

many thanks again for the assistance already provided... im sure between us we will get her to eat

Could you try spendign a few hours with your mum, and take your dogs? Give them time to play and then relax, and at the normal time put down their food.If Rosie eats then, you have your answer.....well sort of :D

Good luck, let us know what Rosie does. Glad she was OK at the vets anyway :)

Glad she has finally eaten !!

I know what its like, my cocker didn't eat properly for the first year and a half..I tried every food available, dried, tinned gormet etc and she would not stick to anything...for the last year she has been on the bakers complete meaty chunks, and a couple of months ago I put her on the the Nature Diet (Lite) and have had no problems since...(touch wood)...nothing like a fussy dog :( :D
