My TT has come into season! She is 7 1/5 months.

At least she is little so not so much 'mess'!

Have looked in my TT book but it doesn't say much about their seasons. My mum has the book of the bitch but is away at the moment!

So from my limited knowledge they bleed for about 5-7 days?

And shouldn't go out while they are bleeding just in the garden? (we have a secure garden)

And shouldn't be walked off lead for 3 weeks?

And good time for spaying is 3 months after first season? this would make her 10 1/2 months.

They can bleed for the full 21 days, although more usually the discharge becomes paler around the 11th day - this tends to be the most fertile period. Don't leave outside her unattended for a moment, not even in your own secure garden. When she goes out, you go out with her. If you take her out for walks it's most sensible to carry her to your car and drive to a quiet, hopefully dog-free, place and lead-walk her there, then drive her back and carry her in.

And yes, the best time for spaying is about three months after the end of the season - your vet will advise as to the best time.

I think it will be a long 3 weeks!

Just adding my ten pence worth.  I would spay after the next season to make sure she has done all her growing up.  Just an opinion.

I think if people choose to keep their bitches entire then their lives should not change when they come into season.To keep an entire bitch is a huge responsibility and the owners should be prepared to be able to do all the normal things they do any other time of the year when their girl is not in season.
Keeping in season girls inside,not walking them etc etc is punishing them for coming into heat IMHO :(

huh? I would rather keep them safe in the garden or, as someone suggested, taking them out in the car to go further away for a walk, than walking as normal and having every dog in the area follow the scent to my door And I'd hardly call it punishment?

If you know your neighbourhood it is quite feasable to walk your bitch.  I have never yet had a dog follow me home but I do live in the sort of neighbourhood where dogs are generally well controlled.  However with a small breed dog I wouldn't be too concerned if I could only exercise them in the garden.

Well wish I could say the same about the dogs round here, but I can't. But I still don't see it as a punishment to keep them in, as long as the garden is big enough its not a problem. 

My cocker spanials would have all found it very frustrating.  Football etc, always had a limited appeal compared to getting out for a good sniff round.  Which is why I felt obliged to have our current one spayed at 8 years old when we started living in another area part time as the dog owners there were not as responsible and cooperative :(.  Not everywhere is good is it? :)

I'd say, get out if you can but don't worry about it if you can't.  Avoiding a missmate is the priority.

If a dog is used to daily walks,like mine are and they all of a sudden stopped,they would certainly feel like they were being punished,and it would be punishing for them to have to sit around the house all day and night,you can only play with them so much and besides i think one of the most important parts of daily walkies is the different,outside stimulation as well as the exercise,somehow the back yard just doesnt compare.We go 2-3 times a day,everyday.I have NEVER missed a day since i have had them,i just couldnt do it to them :(

I never said there was anything wrong with taking them in a car further away for their walks,thats what i do everyday,anyway.All the good spots are too far away to walk to,and the park down the road gets boring after a while,so we save that for when i just dont have the energy to drive any place.

I may see things differently to some of you,as dog walking is such a huge part of my life,nothing gets between the dogs and their walk times and i make sure not to schedule stuff around their walk times.When we are out and about is when they are at their happiest,and when they're happy i'm happy :) So yes,keeping my dogs in for 1 day,lettalone a week or two would be terrible punishment for them,and me :(

That's like saying that when they're on restricted exercise post-operatively, for example, they're being punished. Dogs don't think like humans, and anthropomorphism is very dangerous and unhealthy.

How many times have you read posts about owners asking how to occupy their dogs because their on strict rest as they're going around the bend? Loads,i bet! I do agree with you that the dogs most likely dont look at no exercise as being 'punished',and yes i am anthromorphsising it,but i just cant think of any other word to describe it.MY dogs would be very miserable and bored out of their minds without their daily walks,i just cant expect them to sleep constantly,which is what they would most likely do without my intervention,what other choice would they have? :( Afterall they cant occupy themselves like we can,for example reading,watching tv etc etc

My current dogs were out on their normal walks the day after getting neutered/spayed.I had no intention of taking them out when i brought them home,but the next day,my female especially,stood by the front door crying and brought her lead to me(she always does this),so out we went. I was very lucky as they seemed to know they had to take it easy and just pottered along,they didnt zoom around or anything,otherwise i would have put them on lead.
As for the backyard exercise,this wouldnt work for my dogs as they have no interest in playing ball or anything like that for more than 2 minutes :rolleyes: .They do have a few play sessions together during the day,inside,and the only time they go outside is to pee or i'm out there hanging the washing out

my friends dogs are like this,they have quite a routine & expect their walks on the dot & would get very agy & irritated if theyt didnt get them

wheras my dogs dont really have a routine & they will settle work or no walk

We are not chosing to keep our bitch 'entire' we are waiting till after her season to spay her as recommended by everyone apart from the vet!
We do have a big garden (70ft) and 3 children who love nothing better than running around garden with her!

LOL... when I came out of hospital begining of this year I remember thinking:
1.Yayy!! I can legitimatly (sp!?) sit all day reading CD while I recuperate :D
2. Yikes!! cant walk dog during day (while OH is at work)..in too much pain..which of us will get carted off in a white jacket that buckles at the back first, me or the Siberian excorcet missile :(

But there's nothing that your Noggin cant overcome given a bit of excercise itself ;)
I became a master at thinking up games that put him to work mentally, lots of 'go seek' games and doggy treasure hunts, ropey but hysterical attempts at 'heel work' to music, a home made agility course..never laughed so much and neither has he, we had a great time...one very waggy tail lots of woo-woo's and snoring soundly by 3pm :D
