Our 7 month Cocker spaniel loves to go in the car, but only for short distances, she is usually sick, not at all nice, especially for her. Can anyone give us some advice as we would love to be able to take her on outings rather than leave iher in house. I would appreciate any help. thanks.
Have you tried ginger biscuits? I think I read that in another post. If you put 'travel sick' in the search, I think there are quite a ffew suggestions.

This is something that comes up regularly. Have you tried running a search on this subject using the search facility? :)
Try 'Sealegs', you get that in Lloyds, it's anti travel sickness tablets for humans which do NOT make drowsy. Just a half tab. should do before you travel. Worked very well with my pup, which suddenly started to have excessive saliva, no sickness though. My breeder recommended the tab. to me.

To be honest experience from Friends has shown that actually a really long journey works the best. the more they travel and get used to it the less queasy they are.
Restricting their movement within the car and having them where there is least movement will help. Some of the 4 wheel drives are horrid for throwing them around.
I have to agree with you Brainless. A border collie pup I had many years ago was car sick on very short journeys when we had her. We knew we would be doing a long (2 1/2 hour) journey two weeks after getting her so we tried really hard to get her used to it during those two weeks but failed. During the first hour of the journey she was sick many times but was never sick again. Some weeks later I took her dog training and found that the secretary at the club had her mother's litter sister. When they first had her they had the same problem and tried for a year to get her used to car travel. In the end they took her on a very long journey (several hours) to go on holiday and that completely cured her.
Having said that I think it is kindest to try to get them used to the car over short journeys first but don't know whether that is me humanising the process. Interestingly enough the dog I have had the least trouble with over car tavel had a reasonably long journey (about an hour) to get from his breeder to us while my other recent dogs were both bred locally.

I have to say. The pup that I got from 1/2 an hour away from me used to get car sickness (until we drove to scotland 10hrs ) and the other that we got from 2 and 1/2 hrs away has never had a problem

Oh dear Niamh, I think I know how you feel!
Our 11 week old GR does not like the car at all - as soon as the car starts to move off, he will cry, howl and bark. We didin't realise until yesterday when he was sick after a journey of about 20 miles that he obviously feels really travel sick. He was sick when we brought him home from the breeders the journey was about 2 hours long. On short journeys about 5-10 minutes he isn't sick but just howls and barks. I think I'll try the ginger biscuits. Dos anyone know of any homeopathic remedies that may help?

I have had my latest dachsie 3 weeks and she is very car sick,I have tried the ginger biscuits, short trips, not feeding her, front seat, back seat etc. but nothing works. I've not had a problem like this before,I like to take the dachsies everywhere with me and don't want to leave her behind. She loves getting in the car, puts her paws on the sill of the car to be lifted in when I am still strapping the first on in,lies down once she is harnessed in,tucks her paws in and looks as though she is really enjoying herself. After 2 miles or so she is drooling +++ and then starts to whine before she is finally sick, the other dachsie gets so concerned he is whining too by the time we reach our destination max 7 miles trips from home since I got her. She was even sick going from here to my Mum 0.1miles round the corner when we went to pick her up last week.
I will go to Boots the chemist and try and get some sea legs [WHAT DOSE FOR A 6LB DACHSIE]. I hope she out grows it as she looks so sorry for herself and has a very wet muzzle due to all the drooling when we get to our destination.
If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.
Thanks
Rhona
If your going short distances. Is it somewhere normally nice, ie for a walk. It could be excitement causing it. Try putting her in the car but not going anyway for a little time each day (not if its hot of cause), sometimes with the engine off and sometimes with it running. Build this up. It worked for my bitch who was terrible for being sick.
Something that I've heard that does work is from Doreen Paige. Apprehension drops. You just a couple of drops on their tongue before going out on a journey. If you contact Doreen via her website she would recommend what's best. Otherwise she's at a lot of shows during the year.

I use Sealegs tablets bought from any chemist, I have one bitch now 5.1/2, who is still sick especially on long journeys, not as bad on short ones, I give her 1 tablet about an hour before I go for a long journey, half a tablet for a short run, ive tried her without the tablets but she is still quesy, at least she jumps into the car now, before I would have to carry her in. I've been using the tablets for a long time now and advise puppy buyers if they have any problems with sickness to give these tablets. I tried everything else when I got her as a puppy, ginger biscuits, homeopathic remadies, nothing worked except the sealegs.

Lots of obedience people use Stugeron

Yes my Friend that was most active in Obedience abut 30 years ago always advises that one as it doesn't make the dogs sleepy.
