We are hoping to eventually enrol our border collie into flyball. We do not really know a lot about it but have started reading up and looking up on internet. Does anyone know at what age a border collie can start training - I assume it is a year due to letting their hips strengthen.
Anyone know.?

Linda I take my BC Molly to flyball the "POD" team they are called in Northamptonshire. Molly has been and she really enjoys it. The team really help not just our dog to learn but us too! You do a lot of running and shouting! Its good fun. Molly though has yet to learn how to get the ball out at the end but she is getting there! You start off on a beginers lane with a trainer and they teach you all you need to know!

No Jackie not that I know of any BC or dog swallowing the tennis ball they are to sharp for that! :)

Give it ago then your see how much fun it is for your dog and you.

But I don't have BC I've got Elkhounds. Have tried it with a roll of carpet and they are a wiz at it, but I think a ball may go straight down. Ja:)kie

Oh and they find it nessesary to do a couple circutis of the field before returning it, no good for relays

Sorry Jackie did not mean to get your doggies breed wrong! The Flyball I go to is mainly all fun and gets teh dog to learn new things. Not that I am selling my dog down but Molly is not the best at it but she loves all the running and being with the other dogs. Have a chat with the flyball near your way first most are very happy to help with questions or worries but nine times out of ten they will ask you to come along to see what goes on and to let your dog have a go. At first they don't really catch the tennis ball not until they have learned the run and got used to all the nosie you get hee hee! Its good fun try not to worry though. I beleive that the boxes that eject the balls have been redesigned so that the ball does not come out at enough velocity to be swallowed. also in my experience an Elkhound gob and a collie one are often dimilar in size!! :D
