Do you think the same principles work on both?

Lady at work was saying her young 2 year old child was very clingy, cried when left and was not happy at play group.   I suggested she distracted him with something nice, went out the room for a few minutes and then came back in calmly and did not make a fuss of the child and NOT go back in when he was crying and go from there.  Excellent advice everyone thought, but didn't like to mention it came from a dog training book.   

Can't wait till the next chapter to see how I can lick some more naughty kids into shape!!

We have better communication skills with our own kind - or should have :)  A child can be reassured and have things explained, however simplistically - not so a dog.

I suppose there may be the occasional situation where a solution lies in a similar behaviour or reaction from the adult but not too many :P

At the pre reasoning stage and also generally using ones superior knowledge to engineer correct behaviour reward the good, pretty much the same me thinks.

Isn't a dog supposed to be on about the same level as a 3 year old child? 

Yes that is right stubborn, bolshy and never do as they are told :D :D

I must admit, I automatically use the commands, SIT and WALK ON with dogs and children alike, I sometimes check myself (knowing I use these as dog commands) but my children happily obey the commands without a thought.  :-D

I had to laugh when i read this post as i have just shouted 'enough!!' to stop both the kids from arguing and the dogs from having a mad half hour! It has worked on both counts and i now have a quiet household - for the moment anyway! ;)

lol i think it can apply in certain situations like when you ignore the bad behaviour and reward the good, we stole the naughty step from supernanny which works wonders for time out and also for the dogs they get sent to their crate for time out too. :D :D

There was an article somewhere about a great dane owner applying the same prinicple of training your dog to training your man it was quite amusing.

i think they are very similar & normally the people with badly behaved children have equally badly behaved dogs!!! I often find myself telling them they want to come down a bit harder on both!!!

When I look out of the window and see my 4 month old RR and my 2 year old daughter about to do something like help each other dig a big hole in my new flowerbed, I find it so hard not to laugh when my sharp call of "Ah-Ah" has them both looking round with the expression "Cripes, caught in the act" on both their faces.

I have to say that so far training both of them has been very similar.  I did have to be careful not to get the potty training and house training muddled up between the two though.....

My 2 yr old grand-daughter was here yesterday - she's been clean and dry for one week.:-) :-) :-) When I let the dogs in the garden for a wee, she said, "Do a wee-wee, Maggie, do a wee-wee Luke" Then when they obliged, she said, "Clever girl, Maggie, clever boy, Luke" and clapped them with great enthusiasm. So she thinks it's the same, evidently. :D :D :D
