Been rather an eventful afternoon out here in t'middle of nowhere. only nips and i were driving down the lane on our way to lewes when, not 50 yards from the junction with the A27 I caught sight of a tiny (and unknown to me) little collarless dog padding, in a purposeful but exhausted manner, along on the side of the lane. knowing that the dual carriageway spells instant death for animals and also being very disturbed at the sight of this little unaccompanied dog, i pulled the car over and stopped. i'd hardly got out of the car before having to stop 2 other cars who clearly hadn't seen the dog and i went over quietly and called her to me.

she came straight to me and let me pick her up and it was at this point i realised quite what poor condition she was in since the poor little girl smelt appalling and had a terribly matted coat. she looked to be a cross between some sort of spaniel (possibly a cavvie) and a border terrier and, from the state of her pads she'd clearly been walking for some time.

she settled in my arms and then let me put her in the passenger seat of my car where she settled down nicely and although i'd already got nips in there i'm delighted to say he greeted her politely without any gobby backchat! having checked that she wasn't from any of the cottages nearby i took her home and rang the dog warden and while i was waiting for her to come out, i noticed she had a nasty bloody discharge from her nether regions - regions which she wasn't happy to let me check.  nips, meanwhile continued to be very gentle with her and she followed him into the kitchen and finished up the kibble in his bowl he'd been saving for later. again, he seemed to realise her needs were greater than his and made no protest at all.

when the warden came out she checked for a chip - a spot of confusion arising here when nosy nips got in the way and her machine promptly registered the presence of a chipped jack russell terrier - but there was none and the warden thinks she was abandoned by one of the traveller groups currently "in residence" round here. we agreed that she needed the urgent attention of a vet and an appointment was made then and there before the warden left with her promising to keep me updated. but sadly, she's a very elderly girly (the dog, not the warden) and i don't hold out huge hopes if they find anything seriously amiss. and having lost a cocker to cancer which presented by similar bleeding i'm fearful for her.

she really was the dearest little thing and it was with a very heavy heart i said goodbye to her and while i know dogs are abandoned all the time, i'll never understand how people can be so callous.

(i did get some pictures of her and nips, by the way)

Bless her - she looks ever so sweet!

Poor little bugger though - how can someone do that do an animal?? If you don't want a dog anymore, take it to a rescue centre - don't leave the poor little thing to walk for God knows how long looking for her people.  Fingers crossed she gets the care and attention she deserves and God willing, the people that abandoned her will get their just desserts.

Let us know how she's getting on and well done you for helping her :-)

We found a choccy lab about a year back wondering the streets, my husband nearly ran her over but stopped and tried to get hold of her, luckily me and the sister in laws were on are way back from dress fittings and she came to us ( wouldn't go to a man ). We don't know of any dog wardens in the area, so we went to the vets which was closed, but luckily the vet was just leaving and scanned the dog but left it up to us to contact the owner. Who we did finally get hold of, but i was worried as to what we supposed to do with the dog over night as we had contacted the police and were not much help. Good for you stopping to help as a lot of people would not bother. We have 'travellers' at the end of our estate and i have found they are not the friendliest of dogs while walking my Tyler.

Well done for stopping for her. She must have been so grateful. Even if the worst is diagnosed at least one of her last memories will be of your kindness. She looks such a sweetie. While there are people like you who are willing to help, the callousness of these people will be overshadowed by kindness.

Ohhh BLESS YOU, for taking her in and giving her at least a fighting chance of life...or a painless way out of it...your story made me cry....love Dawn XX

You are a true star for stopping for her.  She looks such a lovely little thing as well.
I'm hope it's good news about the outcome.

Whoever abandoned this poor girl should be ashamed of themselves for being totally heartless.

Roz, what a sweet looking little dog. How sad for her.
Lovely of you to stop and pick her up.
I do hope something can be done for her and that she at least has some time being loved in comfort.

May be totally wrong, but she looks like a recently clipped Lhasa/Shih Tzu (excuse my ignorance folks, never can tell the difference) type or cross to me. Is it worth posting a pic on the Found section of Dog Lost in case someone is looking for her?

She looks a lovely dog and if she is friendly then she may find a nice home to live out the rest of her life with love and attention. I hope you told Nips how good he was to accept this stange dog into his home.

Keep us updated if you hear anymore about her.

What a wonderful person you are.  That poor little mite must have been so glad to see a friendly face and feel a friendly touch.  Your story had me crying my eyes out. I don't know how people can be so heartless.
Please let us know any updates you get.

Oh Roz she looks so sweet, not what I expected at all, your nips seems so happy with her too.  I  hope that she will be ok, if so I am sure she will be snapped up she is just so adorable. Let's hope that her vet check is good.

Well done for stopping and bless you for taking the time to care, mind you how could anyone resists! :-)

Rotten ****** for dumping her.

Though you never know she may have been lost, she looks as though she has been pre-groomed.

this story now has a happy ending!

the dog warden has just phoned to say the little lost girly was lost, not abandoned, and has now been claimed by her owner. she had walked some long distance and there is a bit of a mystery surrounding quite how she managed to get to where i picked her up and i think the warden has had a word about her general condition.

however, it turns out that she's 14 years old and most of the terrible smell was down to dental disease (her teeth were truly dreadful but then i guess so are the teeth of most 98 year old humans!). the discharge is not as serious as we thought according to the vet but is down to "lumps". however, there's a limit to what the wardens will tell you and personally, i still reckon that all isn't very well down there.

Oh great roz :), I'm so glad the poor thing hadn't been dumped but I hope the home she has been returned to is a good one.

Don't know how I missed this last night Roz  but so relieved she has a happy ending :) :) :)  Just been to visit her photos with the handsome Nips and she's adorable - bless you for doing so much!

Everything crossed the Warden will have encouraged better care of her from her owner - perhaps s/he is elderly too and wasn't very aware of her dirty condition.

regards, Teri

That's fantastic news!!!

Sooooo glad that she wasn't abandoned - and well done you for helping her - God knows what would have happened to her otherwise.
- By TrishaH [gb] Date 14.06.06 12:34 UTC
So glad to hear that update - was thinking about her this morning ...it's cheered me up to hear that, and I hope she's well taken care of now :)
- By Carrington Date 14.06.06 16:34 UTC
Love a happy ending. :-)

Hurray!! What a great feeling you must have knowing that you got her back her with family. She's such a cutie.

Hey that Nips is a fine young man isn't he. ;-) and a polite Gentledog as well.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 15.06.06 12:26 UTC
Aw, I'm so glad there was a happy ending - her owners must have been frantic. Not that it matters btw, but she looks more like a Lhasa to me? I'm terrible on breeds though! :-)
- By onetwothree [gb] Date 15.06.06 13:36 UTC
How nice of the warden to bother to call you back and update you on the news
