Hi Guys,

The SBT that my G/F picked up on saturday has really smelly breath, she is currently fed on an hypo-allergenic dog food that the breeder manufactures, mixed with a little natural yogurt, i cant decide wether  her breath smells like the food but slightly stronger could it be the yogurt?

Are you sure the SBT hasn't eaten something it shouldn't have done, like a sock having something trapped in the gut, that is known to make the dogs breath smell. As for the food or yogurt, I wouldn't have thought it would be that, but I'm sure someone will have other ideas shortly. I take it it is a puppy ?

Puppy-breath certainly has a distinctive odour - many people love it, so without actually smelling it, it's impossible to tell whether or not it's normal! What does the vet say?

Yea she is a puppy, she is eight weeks old and definately has not eaten anything she should not have she is under constant supervision, not been to the vets yet she is booked in for friday. Not had any experience with puppies before as i have rescued dogs so never smelt puppy breath to compare this too. She is fine in herself bounding about, she is eating and drinking normally and now doing her toilet duties as normal, do all puppies have bas breath then?

Puppies have puppy breath, and puppy smells.  I love picking up puppies and smelling them!  There's just something about it... :D

So is this not something to be worried about then?

As I said, you need someone who's smelt a lot of puppies to tell you if it's normal! I'm one of the people who loves the smell of puppy - the breath, the coat ... mmmmmmmmmm! I've never known a healthy puppy to have 'bad' breath - puppy-breath certainly, but not 'bad' breath. :)

Ah - puppy breath! We hadn't smelt it for 15 years when we got our new one in April.
Very distinctive, but hard to describe, I've always thought it slightly fruity/slightly 'oniony' :)

The only other bad breath we've encountered was when one of ours had some bad teeth - a different smell altogether and I suppose puppies wouldn't have any of those.

Puppy breath.....I just love it! If it could be bottled and sold, I'd ruin myself buying the stuff :-D
There is something special about the smell of a clean and well looked after pup. And their feet mmmmm  :-p
so soft, like velvet, and they too smell nice.
To the OP, ask the vet on Friday, just to make sure it's the natural smell of puppybreath, and nothing else. Not everyone likes that smell, so don't be embarrased to ask yor vet.

I must be one of those people that doesn't love it.  I don't find it offencive, but not pleasant either, just typical of pups and it gradually reduces and you can't pin point when it went.

When pups are teething they may have bad breath, but not this young.

I suspect it is puppy breath if there is nothing else wrong with pup.

I commented to my puppy's breeder that his breath smelt odd and was informed that it must have been something I had given him to eat,I now know that it is the nomal smell as my new pup smells the same. Like any smells some folk like them and others don't,I am not that keen myself but it's only obvious if she is really close.

I don't like puppy breath but my friend adores it and can't get enough of it :d

sounds like classic puppy breath to me too. if she's ok in all other respects i wouldn't worry but i would set your mind at rest by mentioning this to the vet on friday.

(having previously inherited a cocker spaniel with dental disease of a seriousness that his bad breath could knock you down from 100 yards away, i know doggie halitosis when i smell it and for sure, puppy breath is like chanel no.5 in comparison) ;)

Just out of curiosity what causes that typical puppy breath, s it lasts after weaning so it isn't the smell of digesting bitch milk, anyone?????

I adore the smell of puppy breath - I think it's wonderful, wish it could be bottled and sniffed at more often :P   Reminds me of warm bran mash fed to the horses in winter - glorious :)
