Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / just a quick question
- By bernesebaby [gb] Date 13.06.06 12:49 UTC
Hi just a quick question, do some female dogs give off more of a scent to male dogs when they are in season than others, the reason i ask is my girl is in season at the moment and as she is 4 this is obviously not her first season, we have a male dog who lives next door and a few others down the road, i know that if he really wanted to he could get over as i have heard of dogs jumping 6 foot fences to get to bitches in season and for this reason while she is in season i never leave her unattended in the garden even if it's for a quick wee.
He never bothers with her any more than usual, and they can see each other when shes on our decking.
Sorry if none of that made sense, i am just being curious really as the mother inlaw always says that dogs can smell a bitch in heat from very far away and you'll end up with male dogs howling and trying to get in the garden, is this an old wives tale.

thanks lisa

Some dogs don't react as extremely as others. Yes, some will travel miles and scale high walls (all because the lady loves .... :D) but others just aren't that bothered. You're quite right not to take the chance though. :)

Nope, not an old wives tale.... From my experience Siberians are terrible for going loopy for bitches miles away!

I'm assuming that the nearby dogs are still entire? If they're castrated it would go a long way towards explaining the lack of interest! ;) :D

I have 3 entire males...when my bitch comes into season one goes barmy for her from day one,one will show an interest during her fertile days and the other ,although he  is more than aware that she is in season will look to me for 'permission' before approaching her!(which he never gets:rolleyes:

And then you have the bitches that act differently. They either sit down and growl at the male ;) or, when 13 years old, blind, deaf, incontinent, etc, will still drag herself to her favourite beau's house

LOL  I own one of these :-p Not yet incontinen, though
To the OP, some bitches will give off more of a smell than others, when in heat. Then some bitches seem to smell interesting to males all the time, including the months inbetween seasons.  As someone above said, if the male is an experienced stud dog, he will only be interested when the time is exactly right. Some unused males also seem to have this ability to "know". So don't let your next door neighbour fool you into feeling safe, he might just be awaiting the right time to make his move ;-) :-D
