Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Very confusing!!!

I can't quite understand something and I think some of you might be able to help me. I have 2 bags of Royal Canin in front of me and I'm reading their ingredients .... RC Chihuahua:
rice, dehydrated poultry meat, animal fats, wheat gluten, maize glouten, poultry liver (these are the first few on the list... I wrote them down in the same order).....
RC mini adult: maize, maize flour, dehydrated poultry meat, animal fats, maize glouten, poultry liver, beet pulp, vegetable oil.....

Now I'm checking American Royal Canin mini adult site and this is what it says: chicken, brewers rice, chicken meal, brown rice, corn gluten meal, chicken fat, natural chicken flavor.....

RC Chihuahua: chicken meal, rice, brown rice, oatmeal, soy protein isolate, chicken, chicken fat.....

Now this is what I can't understand.... how can 2 foods of the same brand have completely different ingredients???!! Even though they were made for 2 different countries it's impossible that they are SO MUCH different!!  Is that even possible? What does it say on UK RC mini adult?
And also, I can't believe that maize, maize flour, dehydrated poultry meat, animal fats, maize glouten are MAIN ingredients RC.... specially since it's considered high quality food!

As long as the ingredients on the bag match the ingredients of the food in the bag there is no problem.

Brand name food ingredients do differ from one country to another, even with people food.   Reasons they differ are differences in availability and cost of ingredients in different countries.   Potentially differences in government regulations about permitted ingredients as well as regulations regarding labeling standards (same ingredient, different description).  Consumer preferences in different countries also mean manufacturers tweak recipes.  Lots of reasons why ingredients for the same brand of food can differ between countries.

With people food oftentimes ingredients differ because of regional preferences in taste, not much of consideration with pet food I presume!  For example, UK varieties of foods (such as breakfast cereals) are generally sweeter than the same brand sold in the U.S.

Whether or not regard Royal Canin as a high quality food is a mostly a matter of personal opinion, of course.   In this case IMO it just goes to show that "breed specific" food is largely a marketing gimic.

It's so annoying, isnt it Ory  I remember when i first looked into RC a few years back, for some reason i was getting all my info/ingredients from the American site.I went out and bought a bag stupidly not checking the ingredient list presuming it would be the same all over the world. I got home, opened it,and only then did i look at the ingredient list  Well needless to say my dogs never ended up getting any,i was so furious!!

It's ironic that you posted this when you did,as i only rang the RC customer service the other day asking why the ingredients are so different and why we got the inferior lot! I asked why our dogs deserved less than their american counterparts??? The bottom line is the american RC is made over there and ours is brought in from France.US consumers are much more pet food savvy and demand more holistic options, not that i would say their version is anywhere near holistic, but it is way better than the stuff we get
The woman i spoke to sounded like she was reading off of a sheet and back peddled the whole way,and got all flustered when i asked her specific questions. She more or less treated me like some dumb pet owner who would believe everything she said and who didnt know any better

It is so frustrating actually!!! I am a very strange person  and usually overanalize every single thing and obviously my dog's food as well. I was so surprised when I realized that some well known company sells food under the same name and different ingredients. It's actually good that you called, as I was going to do the same thing, but decided to ask on the forum first.....

Oh yeah..... I completely agree. Actually I found another food that you guys sell in UK. We don't have it over here, but when I move in a couple of months, I'm probably going to check it out.

Good quality food but, as with any, not for every dog - many posters have found their dogs lose too much weight on it, including mine ;)
