As i have said on a another post we have lost several of our pups. :-( 6 were born alive but now we only have 2 left.
We think that the pups succumbed to fading puppy syndrome and now have the remaining 2 on anti-biotics. They were a bit touch and go saturday night and yesterday, but in the evening seem to have perked up and started sucking again. Today they are sucking well and have stopped moving around all the time and crying. fingers crossed!
However, we were hoping to keep the bitch pup to breed from in the future (after showing and health tests etc of course ;-) ) but is there likely to be any effect on her after having had FPS? Is she more likely to produce a FPS litter? Or would she possibly pass on some resistance to FPS? I know that there are many different causes of FPS so perhaps any immunity would not be likely.
Also, would our bitch (the pups mother) be more likely to have a FPS litter next time? We have very kindly been given a free return to the stud dog as we lost so many pups but dont want to go through all this heartache again.
Has anyone suffered FPS and gone on with either a surviving pup or the mother?
im sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon but i understood that it is just one of those things, not heriditary and no more likely to happen twice than once??
Hi Helen,
FPS is nothing more than a description not a diagnoises, which covers everything from E.Coli, Herpes, Umbilical cord infections, malformed hearts, dehydration, hypoglycemia, or maybe just being too cold, therefore it would be extremely bad luck for your bitch to have this happen again as long as your bitch is thoroughly checked before and during pregnancy for any infections.
I would have a jolly good read up on all the above mentioned so that you are prepared to act very, very quickly at spotting a pup in trouble immediately.
I have my fingers crossed for you that your pups will survive, if the female pup should thrive and grow into a healthy show winner, then there should be no reason at all not to breed from her, so do not worry about that part.
I wish you and the remaining pups a very happy ending.

How sad. It must be heartbreaking to lose pups one by one like that. I really feel for you.
I remember reading about FPS on here a few months ago. Isn't there a very new technique that can save them? Only performed in a handful of practices and has something to do with plasma?

That is awful. It is so hard to loose a puppy let alone a litter but to lose the mother must be the absolute worst of all. I hope you will give my condolences to your sister but I am sure she will be finding your support a tremendous support at this time.

It's a very sad story and will hopefully enlighten people who just want to have the experience, that there is a real risk in mating a pet bitch. What a shock for the family. :(

Golly, how often do you hear "I want to have a litter so that the children can see the pups born?" I'm sure that this isn't what these people want their children to experience? :(

How tragic Cherylw - losing the litter must have been heartbreaking enough but to lose the mum as well doesn't bear thinking about :( :( :(
I'm so very sorry for all the family. Teri x
So so sorry to hear about your sisters loss :-(
Makes me realise that we were lucky in a way to still have our girl and two lovely pups.
Both pups doing really well now. They have just started having some solid food and look very messy ;-)
Thanks for all the links. I think from the research i have been doing that they had herpes. I did ask my vet about plasma transfusion (coming from horse world it's fairly common. Two foals of ours have had to have one) but he said that he didn't want to inject a pup as it wa shard enough ot inject into an adults vein!!  It certainly fill you with confidence doesn't it ;-)

I had a fps litter 2 years ago, it was horrible. 10 pups were born and 4 pups lived. I read up on it and the most common course for fps is canine herpes, there is a vaccine for it. This year i have mated the bitch again and she is due anytime now, she had an injection for canine herpes 1 week after she was mated and she had an injection when she was 7 weeks pregnant, so hopefully it works.
Can this be caught from humans who have a cold sore on their mouth. I am worried aboout all the people who keep kissing my pups? I have read the links but it didn't mention this. My sister's british blue cat has the virus in his eye. When she was waiting to pick the cat up the breeder said she had to leave it a couple of extra weeks as it needed more time. I think it was about 12 weeks by the time she picked it up. A while later it had trouble with its eye and now its 8 years old and only my sister's dedication has kept it from loosing his eye but i think it will come to it eventually. Although he is insured it has cost her thousands in medication and she has to pay extra in the cattery as he has to have drops about three times a day. This was also due to the herpes virus. I wonder if the breeder lost any of the kittens.

This was also due to the herpes virus. That's FELINE Herpes and can only affect cats. It's very common and virtually impossible to get rid of, but some cats live without symptoms. Seeing an eye specialist and getting Interferon eye drops (I think it may be a case of only one vet in the UK having a licence for it, not sure if others have now -Pip Boydell) can help a LOT, as can giving L-lysine.

I heard form someone who had pups that one wasnt feeding and constantly crying, the vet said fading pup and didnt expect the pup to live. They were eventually told by another breeder to give the pup colic drops for babies and it worked pup started feeding and thrived.

I always have infant colic drops on hand with puppies. My first litter, I had a puppy at the Vets at 3.30 in the morning because of colic, now I don't panic nearly as much, but they don't half make a noise when they have colic!
