Hiya, got a question for a friend. He's having problems with cats stealing the fish in his pond so is thinking of investing in a sonic cat deterant, but wants to know if they work before forking out for one! Anyone on here got any experience of them, are they effective??

My MIL has one, it's not that effective and if your friend has fairly good hearing it's excruciating to hear :(  it would also affect dogs in the vicinity ;)

Why not invest in a sprinkler system with a motion sensor ?  One thing that gets cats out is a water spray ;)   or if he's the big game hunter type he could invest in a water pistol ;)  they do work as long as the cats can't see where the water is coming from ;)

My dad has one and my brother can hear it and finds it uncomfortable but my dog isn't bothered by it at all.

Sorry no, but your Q reminded me of the best fish deterrent I had - my first goldfish!  My old cat was always lurking round the pond, and one day she was leaning over trying to hook a fish out - and Bob, bless his fins, leaped clear out of the water and smacked her on the nose with his tail!  She didn't go near the pond for quite a while after that :D

Like it! I'll get him to teach the fish karate, sounds like it'd be more effective than the sonic thingy

Is he absolutely sure that the cats are taking the fish??  According to PFK more fish are taken by HERONS than by any other animal ;)   Netting above the pond would stop the problem easily enough :)

Definately cats taking them, the little girls across the road witnessed it twice and gave an accurate description of said cat. He's already heron-proofed the ponds, and would rather not use netting because then you wont really be able to see the pond and it'll stop the other birds drinking from it.

I use my garden hose on my local cats.  They only have to get jetted once and they don't come back :)  And apart from anything else it doesn't hurt them, only their pride!

Neighbour had to cover his pond with netting (and it was a large pond).  He was convinced it was cats as there were so many in our neighbourhood but one morning I saw a heron flying past my kitchen window.  I couldn't believe my eyes.

I walked round to the back of a house to measure up for landscaping and instantly asked what the noise was as it was horrible. They couldnt work out what I could hear until I spotted the sonic cat deterant. They had to unplug it for me!!!!
We have started landscaping the garden and I get an instant headache as soon as I walk into the back garden and if I am in ear shot for more than a few minutes I feel sick. so we have to keep unplugging it!!!!!! I can even hear it out the front of the house!!!!!
My dad or the owners of the cannot hear it at all.
My mum came to pick me up from work early one day, and out of interest I plugged it back in. She heard it straight away!!!!! And couldnt understand why no one else can!!!!
So the moral of that story is, Make sure if she orders one, then they will refund if she can hear it. And make sure any body thats regularily in her garden or near it INCLUDING neighbours havnt got as sensitive hgearing as me!!!!!!
Although you have always known I am strange havnt you Erin!!!!! LOL
