Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / not had her first season yet
- By Betty Boop [gb] Date 05.06.06 20:51 UTC
sorry to bother everyone again but i have an 18 month old newfy girl and she does not seem to have had a season is this natural. There has been no blood so i assume that she has not had a season.
Her male companion cannot mate with her can he if she has not had a season,
My males are usually castrated but he is only two and i dont want him done if possible as i want to stud him. Once she has had her season i will have her spayed. Having nearly lost one of my dogs last week from pyomia  i think it is i am just going to worry about her now. any suggestions please.

You really ought to be more aware of whether she has had one or not {"she does not seem to have had a season"}.

Is there any sign of her vulva having developed or her teats?  She may have had a silent season, i.e. no blood show, but even so as I understand it there are physical changes to be observed when puberty is reached - the g#n#talia does not reduce to prepubescent size again nor the teats.

One of my own bitches had her first season at 21 months and I've heard of several in my breed being as late as 2 years so it's obviously very possible that your girl hasn't had her first season yet and is not necessarily a cause for alarm.  If you are still in touch with her breeder I suggest you contact him/her and determine what the usual heat cycle is for their line.

You will have to ensure that you have arrangements in place for when she is in season to avoid an accidental mating - either arrange for the male to go off to family members or put one or other into kennels.

regards, Teri

hi teri
no change in her except she is fatter but no otherphysical signs she is greedy. Her teats are normal she is not trying to nest, my staffy had pups two years ago so i know what to look for but there are no signs that mating has taken place. If male gets frisky she snaps at him does not like him near her rear end at all.
I am expecting large amounts of bleeding wit her being a big breed.
When she is in season my male is going to my daughters for the three weeks once she has had this season she will be spayed
thank you

Hi again,

the changes I described were not in relation to her possibly being in whelp or having a phantom - merely naturally occurring physical changes which occur during a bitch's first season and the results of which remain to a lesser degree than when during the season but do not reduce to pre first season size

regards, Teri
hope that makes sense - not sure I understand it LOL :P

My Newfie had her first season at 10 months old but that is early for the breed. I had been told that anywhere from 18 - 24 months is more common.
