Hi I've started looking on the net well in advance for worming liq for my puppies.  They are just over a week old now, was looking to worm them at 4 and 7 weeks does this sound right? when do all you guys worm your pups and more importantly WHAT STRENGTH ??
As I have been looking at Panacur but they have 2.5% for puppies and also 10% puppies as well - which one or is there another brand out there that you would suggest??? and how many bottles will I need? we have 5 puppies and shall be keeping one.
Been looking on here http://www.hyperdrug.com/searchprods.asp for the liquid panacur what do people think to the prices?
And also what flea treatment would you recommend.  Cheers

Sorry loads of questions - and I really appreciate your help

I always use Drontal Puppy suspension, 1ml per kg of bodyweight, plus I start worming at 2 weeks old, then every 2 weeks till they leave.

I found Panacur always gave them really upset tummies, one litter so much so they dehydrated, my vet recommended using Drontal as it's not so harsh on their tummies, plus you only give it on one day every 2 weeks instead of over 3 days as you do with Panacur.

Me too Sharon. the first litter we had were quite poorly after Panacur so have used Drontal ever since with no probs at all.

I've always used Panacur with my RRs.  Some friends tried Drontal and their pups had really upset tums.

I also use Drontal Puppy Suspension. When I used Panacur I nealy lost the whole litter so ever since I have used Drontal. I have never given any puppies flea treatment. I doubt that most flea products will be suitable for puppies under 12 weeks old.

Hi, I recently used panacur 10% on my 7 pups. It did seem to upset their tums but not sure if this would happen whichever one I used. I would definately try the Drontal as it is only one dose as worming them over three days seemed to prolong any upset and was very fidely. I took mine to the vets for their first worming which was at three weeks. It was a free consultation I just paid for what worming solution I needed. I then wormed them again at 7 weeks. My vet told me not to bother with flea treatment unless it was an issue but to suggest to the new owners that they should do it. He did give me a puppy pack for each pup which contained first flea treatments so I was happy that the new owners would do so.

Agree with many of the others, I would NOT use Panacur but do use Drontal Puppy. I worm at 3, 5 and 7 weeks and then the new owners continue at 9 and 11. I never flea treat any of my animals unless they have fleas -been years since I last saw one though.

just looking for some info here - why do puppies have to be wormed so often when they are small as I would have thought that mum would be clear of worms before she was bred from?

>When the bitch becomes pregnant the hormones that she releases stimulates the roundworm larvae, which can be lying dormant in the tissues. Some will go to the uterus and into the developing puppies, some will go to the mammary glands and be passed to the puppies through the milk and others will stay in the intestine. Pregnant dogs should be treated for worms while pregnant and while feeding the puppies, also the puppies should be treated every few weeks in their own right.

Worming before will reduce the burden but will not prevent all worms.

Pregnancy hormones activate encysted worms in the dam, so to minimise the worm burden for the litter the dam will need worming during the second half of pregnancy and for a couple of weeks post-whelping.

yes mum would be clear of worms but the eggs stay dormant in the bitches muscles and when she becomes pregnant they migrate to the puppies. thats why its recomended that bitches be wormed daily from day 42 of pregnancy untill 3 days after birth.Even if you do this pups will still need worming. worms are one of those horrid things that mother nature wants to keep alive!!

Thank you for all those replies - a little bit more knowledge under my belt now :)

Thanks guys this is brilliant really appreciate all the help
I know when we got Mabel, our breeder wormed at 5 & 9 weeks then told us to do it again at 12 weeks then 3 to 6 months there after.  We have never ever had any problems with worms and we also put her on worming liq from 40 day till just after she whelped so really is there the need to worm the pups every 2 weeks really??
Just thinking of their poor tums - I am happy to do it but was checking if it is really needed that often?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 04.06.06 20:40 UTC
It depends if you want to pay to feed the worms as well as the pups! ;)
- By Meggidy [gb] Date 04.06.06 20:42 UTC
Of course I don't :) I'm more than happy to pay out for the stuff :)

It really was the case of thinking do they really need it as often as that - but if they do then that's fine :)

Cheers
