Can anyone tell me at what age if it happens does a female dog stop having seasons. And when can male dogs be used for stud.

Bitches never stop havings seasons.  Male dogs can be used at stud any time after their health tests are completed satisfactorily and they have been established as good examples of their breeds, most usually in the show ring or working arena.

Female dogs can stop having seasons, mine did at about 10 yrs. I dont think she was unique lol. Dogs can start mating from about 10mths, depending on the dog, bit like a male, when puberty hits. As to when its responsibly correct to use one, then follow what Isobel has said. Health tests relevant to breed, true type which is proven be that in whatever sphere the dog excells at, or is meant for, excellent nature (which to my mind superseeds true type but thats my opinion) and his general good health.

Males can physically accomplish the act and produce pups from as early as five or six months, and accidents have been know to occur when a male pups Mum comes into the season following ehr litter.

Of xcourse it is not wise or ethical to use a dog before it is mature enough to be evaluated or health screened.

Thanks everyone for your input. This is to be used on our help sheets that we give out at puppy classes. We are often asked these questions and although we have a basic sheet on seasons and neutering there is always one that wants to know more. :-)

Many of my Pomeranian's seem to stop having seasons at around 10 years of age, my Spanish up to now as I've only had 2 as they've only been in the country for 13 years seem to continue for the rest of their lives.

Of course male dogs can also mate a lifetime as I have used a male at the age of 11 and he hadn't been used for a while inbetween!
