Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Are there any complete foods that support urinary tract?
- By peewee [gb] Date 29.05.06 21:12 UTC
You know like some of the complete cat foods say they 'support urinary tract'?  Well I'm just wondering if there are any dog foods that do the same.  You see our girl (she was 1 on the 25th :D ) has been on antibiotics twice for supposed urine infections over the past 3 months.  She finished her last 14 day course of anti's 3 weeks ago but still periodicially has the same 'symptoms' - weeing more often than usual and more than usual.  She is in no discomfort, there is no noticeable change to the colour/smell of her urine etc etc.  She has 1 cranberry capsule daily (vet recommendation).  I am now thinking that it could be her food as I know all dogs 'react' differently to different foods.  She is currently munching her way through JWB Ocean Fish (she also has the Lamb and Turkey varieties).  Anybody got any suggestions?  Thanks! :)

Royal Canin veterinary foods have specific formulas. One us called Canine Urinary. You can find information about it here. I have no experience with it, just aware it exists. Poor girl. Happy Belated Birthday to her! :-O in full and best birthday singing voice

Cheers for the info Lori :)  Just haven't been able to 'research' anything myself due to the madness that is Final Year at uni

Any other foody suggestions would be appreciated from ya'll

Edit to say - maybe I shouldn't have used the term 'urinary tract' cos after following Lori's link it appears to be a disease and she hasn't got crystalisation or anything (been vet checked twice).  What happens is that pupsicles periodically wee's more often than usual and more than usual and has had a couple of 'accidents' in the house - mainly on the settee when she's been having a snooze and someone's felt their leg go a bit damp.  I don't belive it to be 'incontinence' as like I said its periodic nor do I believe it to be an infection as midway through the last 14 day course of antibiotics she had a 'bout' of the afformentioned *hmmmmm*

I think Eukanuba and Hills do one too? But only from the vet.

Haven't Arden Grange got some extract in their food for uninary tract?
I think it is Cranberry Extract in all their foods.

My bag of Arden Grange has cranberry extract. Don't know how that works though. Isn't it the Ph of the cranberry juice that's supposed to be beneficial? It's not why I buy it so I haven't really thought about the cranberry.

Sorry peewee the only other thing I can think of is to make sure your dog doesn't get too much sugar or yeast assuming they have similar affects of dogs as humans. Those nasty bacteria love their sugar.

Thanks for the replies :)  I'm gonna try changing over to Arden Grange and cutting out the cranberry capsules to see if it is the food she's on at present.  Got another bag and a bit to go of JWB though so it won't be for a wee while (no pun intended ;) ).  Will have a word with the vet and see if they've got any more suggestions in the mean time.

Update - from Thursday morning I stopped giving pupsicles the JWB Junior Ocean Fish and went onto the Adult Duck that I had bought to wean her onto.  I also stopped giving her the cranberry capsules as I think maybe she was getting a bit much and it was having a detramental effect.  Since then she has not 'dribbled' once and has been weeing reasonable amounts 3/4 times a day which is back to 'normal' - long may it last! :)
