Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Raw bones from the butchers

Hi Everyone,

My pup is 12 weeks old and i gave him a bone from the butchers yesterday and he seems to have the runs today! I know that pups have very sensitive tums but i didnt think this would happen! Can i not give him any bones now then? He seems to really like them but i dont want to give him a bad tum everytime i give him one!

Any info/help would greatly be received! x

Hi,

Pups do have sensitive tums and can be easily upset - I would maybe just let him have it for a limited amount of time, especially if it's a marrow bone as marrow is very rich and too much can upset even an adult dogs tum!  I wouldn't not give him them again just because of one upset tummy though, although do wait until his tumy is back to normal before trying again.  Make sure they're nice and fresh and don't have any yukky fatty bits on and if they do remove that bit.  A nice fresh knucle bone might be the best bet.  Their tums can get upset at new things if they aren't introduced slowly but they will get used to them, just not too much and easy on the marrow.  :-)

It would have been the marrow inside the bone that has given him the trots! Just make sure he doesn't have it for too longer periods when you give them until his tum can tolerate it a bit better! I know they love them and they are fantastic for when teething! Just increase it slowly over time till his tum is better rather than all in one go! Good luck, they are such fun at this age.

Yes, scoop any marrow out of the bone and remove the fat from the surface.

I don't now, but until they adjust I would cut it all off! hope he enjoys many future bones!
