Last week my dog cut his foot very badly on something sharp (possibly glass) so it was stitched up and bandaged. That was last Tuesday. He was fine with his bandage until Friday when it was changed. He then started chewing a bit at the top. I thought that he was just pulling the top fabric tape stuff and as he had nearly pulled it all off I pulled the rest off to leave just the rest of the bandage.

I did not see him chewing his leg or the bandage at all but today his bandage was changed again and around his knee it is all scabby and red and the fur has gone. I don't know if the bandage did this or if he chewed through the bandage. The new bandage was put on so that it did not go up his leg too high so that the scabby bit did not get rubbed band got some air.

Since his bandage was changed 4 hours ago he has not left his leg alone. He is not chewing the bandage but just licking the sore bit. Should I leave him to it? I don't want it to get worse? He looks as though it is really itchy. Should I put something on it?? Cover it??

You do need to stop him licking it, because he'll simply make it sore, so he'll lick it more and possibly end up with a very nasty wound. Creams and stuff will simply encourage him to lick them off and make it worse. You could try putting a long sock on him and sticking it with elastoplast to his shoulder, or you could make an Elizabethan collar out of cardboard and stitch it to his collar.

Not the nicest of remedies - but it prevents the lick sore that will develop if its not allowed to dry up.:-)

I have put a sock on it and taped it on with fabric strapping (not sure how long it will stay on as it is his back leg). He seems to be leaving it more than he was before.
Is there anything that I can put on to stop it itching?

Try giving him antihistamine tablets/liquid.  Just something like Piriton syrup, 1 teaspoon on his food should help.  Worked with mine for quite a while.
