Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Smoked haddock for dogs?
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 25.05.06 07:45 UTC
Might seem an odd thing to contemplate adding to the dogs' diets ...BUT OH didn't close one of the freezers in the Utility Room last night.....it contained (on the bottom shelves) the dogs' minched chicken.   However, the top shelves contained a bag (3 kg) of naturally smoked haddock, frozen veggies - and a large turkey:rolleyes:

Thor & Beau decided to help themselves to some midnight feasts.....two very full-up aussies got up this morning, looking like I feel after I've stuffed myself ;).   Frozen peas & broccoli all over the floor - and about half the bag of smoked haddock.  - I think they also helped themselves to two or three packs of Landywoods finest minced chicken as well:rolleyes:

Thank goodness the turkey was almost rammed on the top shelf!  So now WE are having turkey over the holiday weekend (and all next week too!).

My query is:  can I feed the rest of the smoked haddock to the others?   Beau and Thor are certainly not going to have it as treats!

They've both been out this morning, bounced about and poohed - no runs or ahything, so I think that their digestions are obviously cast-iron!

As a good Sot I hate waste :D  I wouldn't do it on a regular basis but as a one off I would. Mine get tinned pilchards and mackerel and when I've accidently picked up canned in brine instead of tomato sauce I've given it a good rinse and fed it with no problems

There are warnings about eating smoked foods regularly but I don't think a one off occasion could possibly harm them at all.

Mine get raw smoked haddock (not the cheap coloured kind) when it is on offer.  Very good for them.

I know you know this Tohme :), but incase anyone else is confused it is not the colouring that means we should eat smoked foods in moderation.

"Food facist" :P
Interesting article in the Times By Nicholas Ruffard, a snippet:

>Although epidemiological studies have shown an increased risk of certain types of cancer in places such as Hong Kong, where there is high consumption of smoked foods, the link is by association only. There is no scientific evidence.

>Critics of the new regulations -- which could be law by this summer if passed by the European Council -- described them as unnecessarily severe. They say the facts that smoked foods, unlike tobacco, are not inhaled and that the flavouring is present in small doses mean there is no realistic risk.<

 Someone should tell the Government :)  As in all things though taken in moderation, no problem,  unless you have a daily order at Inverawe :)
