Topic Dog Boards / Health / Inkie had OCD op today
- By Wendy Wong Date 24.05.06 18:18 UTC
My 8 month lab bitch had an operation today for OCD in her right elbow.  All went well and fragments of bone and her cartlidge were removed.  She has stayed in the Vets overnight to be observed for swelling or pain and hopefully be allowed home in the morning.  Cant wait to give her a hug! Has anyone experienced this type of op?  Any feedback would be appreciated.

No help here, though know a human who had this op, and he was very sore afterwards, so lots of TLC for her when she gets home :D

Hi Wendy,
Bet Inky will be happy to see you too tomorrow, and recieve your hugs and love :-p
I sold a pup nine years ago, to a family that already owned a RR bitch. She had OCD on both front legs, had the op. first on one, then on the other leg. This was done before they bought the pup from me, which means it was at least ten years ago. After the initial post operative rest, and then slow training back to normal, she has been fine all her life. She is now an old lady, twelve years old, and unfortunatelly a little overweight. If she isn't moving about as she used to, it's more due to old age than any problems going back to her operations.
Good luck to you and Inky,
Karen

Hi I know someone whos dog had the same op. He was as good as new straight after op but was kept on very short lead walks for a long time and not allowed to run with other dogs. Once they have been operated on for this condition the joint will mend its self as best as possible as nature does best, though the cartilage will not grow back so long term prognosis "may be" arthritis but that may be a long way down the line or never at all. As far as I am aware the dog has been completely sound since but is given Glucosamine to help his joints. Just make sure you follow what the vet says and stick to the regime and everything should be fine. All the best! I could go on and on but don't want to bore you but if you need more info let me know.Regards.

Just an update on Inky.  Fetched her from the Vets at lunchtime and all was well, no swelling and she was putting her weight on that leg. Eating and drinking well.  Bandaged from top to toe.  Thanks for your positive feedback it was nice to hear from you all.

Recent thread.  If it was my dog and she was in pain, stood to benefit and the vet considered it appropriate I would give it and just observe for any problems.
