Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / The injection....

Please does anyone have information on the hormone injection, we are considering it for are Parsons Terrier who is 16 months old, I dont want to do it long term but just for this season and maybe the next, we want to breed from her once along side her breeder (for help and moral support) but not yet as  we are in the middle of some renovations ( which should give us a dog room!)  and I want to be prepared adn not rush into finding a partner. However She suffers from phantoms right from the first season and the last one was full blown milk and hiding toys, the Galastop makes her sicky and sleepy and depressed for nearly 6 weeks and dont want to put her through that unless we have to, and it has also made the choice of spaying difficult for timing as have considerd this and will get her spayed after her litter.
Any thoughts please would be greatly appreciated.

I only used it once and soon after my bitch's temperament changed and she started attacking my other girl who she had lived with for 4 years.

Can't be sure but would be wary of using again. Can't really comment on any effects on future matings but I'm sure someone will be along soon

I would not use it if you are even considering breeding from your bitch as it can seriously affect future fertility and cycles.

I used it on my Groenenedael bitch, and when she was spayed she was found to have a very iffy looking uterus.

I've used it a couple of times with no negative effects at all. There will be lots of horror stories posted here soon, there always are when people talk of this injection but I found it useful. I wouldn't use it long term though, but I know some people who have - again will no ill effects. Some show people use it twice a year so they can show their bitches all year, having them spayed would alter their coats. I used it when my collie girl came in season the day before my borzoi boy was due to be neutered, I didn't want him all upset and in pain at the same time so got her the jag. She came out of season 3 days later, came in again 8 months later as usual, was mated and produced a lovely litter. I then used the jag again the next time she came in season just as I was going on holiday (with all the dogs). Again she finished in a few days, no ill effects. I've finally 'bit the bullet' and had her and her daughter spayed yesterday.

I've used it before on my bitches and had no effects whatsoever, if it affected the fertility of them when I mated it them, it was maybe only to make them more fertile!

Hm no "horror story"but my friends Champion Afghan never conceived again after having the injection(had previously had a good sized litter containing some super puppies in it) & my X breed bitch who couldn't be spayed(due to heart problem)had a terrible reaction at the injection site at the time of the injection & died two days later having never left the vets-never got charged anything for her care/treatment by the vets BTW

I have to say that of the 2 bitches that I've had injected over the past umpteen years both conceived without a hitch and went on to have litter sizes of 14 pups!

I've only used it once a few years ago, seemed to be no problem.  I was advised not to use it every season as then it could cause problems.

One of my girl's used to have seriously bad phantoms but last time I managed to stop it from happening.  Basically, as soon as I noted that she was brewing to come into season I started her on Vitamin B6, then once she was in season I put her onto Dorwest Herbs Raspberry Leaf Tablets as well for 12 weeks & it seemed to do the job.  Maybe worth a try & a lot more natural than the injection

Thanks for everyones posts.... very helpful. have decided not to get have the injection and going to try the rasberry leaf tablets and if that doesnt work will use galastop this time then next season going to have a litter then have her spayed.... though the way shes going and climbing out of 5ft5 fencing (garden looks like a prison) we could have parsons terrier x lakeland.... new fencing coming in about 3 weeks  hopefully she will wait till after then b4 coming into season! I was really hoping for parsons x parsons!!

I also found Sepia 30c excellent for drying up milk ~ if you get in touch with Ainsworths they'll be able to advise the right dose for your girl if you need it :)
