But what is there to be pleased with ?? :) Here, at least, we put our rubbish out once a week in sacks. The dustman walk down the road and pick the sacks up and put them into a large skip on wheels - every so often they tip it into the dust lorry. How does that earn a tip ?? :) Every other week they collect our recycling - all that requires is to lift the recycling about 6 feet from the grass verge outside our house into the recycling cart :) Do your dustman provide some other service that they don't get paid for ?? :)

There are plenty of demanding jobs - the vast majority attract no tips. Most people just expect to get the wage that they were offered when they accepted the job.

All i said originally was i tip most people thats the way i was brought up i didn't realise i would be picked upon for what personally is my choice.

I tip waiters/taxis/ yes shop assistants at xmas in their little boxes/builders/plumbers/the AA/RAC/nurses/teachers etc etc etc sorry that seems to flame you but thats the way i am.

Personally I wouldn't empty people's bins for any amount of money.  If what I saw in people's donation bags, when I worked for Shelter, is anything like their refuse (Although I suspect a lot worse) I wouldn't do a dustman's job for all the tea in China.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 23.05.06 20:27 UTC
I agree that it's not a pleasant job, nobody is disputing that - but there are many, many unpleasant jobs and the people doing them don't get tipped. This is the point, surely ??

I don't do a 'pleasant' job but I haven't been tipped as I don't have a regular route where I see the same customers week after week but one of the drivers at my work does, and he gets allsorts coming up to Christmas and meat from a local butcher's once a week too.

I'm old enough to remember the dustman coming round to the back of the house, taking the lid off the metal bin, swinging the bin over his shoulder and carrying it out to the lorry and manually emptying it.  Taxi drivers used to knock on the door rather than sit on their backside tooting for attention. My postman changes as regularly as the times of day that my post arrives.  As already mentioned one my daughters is a trained lifeguard but she didn't get tips so why should other services get tipped?  Some of her duties were not nice and held much more responsibility for health and safety than those traditionally tipped.

It's not a case of being tight especially if you haven't got money to give away?
- By Annie ns Date 23.05.06 21:27 UTC
Oh boy Lori, you've started a right can of worms here! :D  Amazing where an innocent question can lead isn't it?
- By mygirl [gb] Date 23.05.06 21:31 UTC
I certainly havent got money to give away i just appreciate what services i'm provided and tip accordingly, i give a tenner to the refuse men at xmas and a tenner to the postman, if my hairdo was £12.50 and i gave 50p each time then its a lot more that a tenner over the year so as i said i tip accordingly to the binmen.

Thats just me.

According to Connexions Direct refuse men can expect to earn from £11,000 to £17,000, drivers £15,000 to £20,000 well above the minimum wage.  If you don't have a lot to spare perhaps they should be tipping you :D
Socialists and trade unionists fought for many years for a minimum wage.  I think tipping in this day and age is an anachronism and an insult.

My ex husband father to my daughter is not even NEAR what you are quoting my husband a qualified spark isnt either!!  Your sums must be determined by where you live as they are not reflective of where we are by a mile.

As you said "According to Connexions Direct refuse men can expect " thats certainly doesnt mean thats the norm for all areas.
- By briedog [gb] Date 23.05.06 21:52 UTC
to end it all i dont tip my hairdresser beacuse it my husband that dose my hair.

but i do give the dustman and the postman a tip at christmas.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 23.05.06 21:55 UTC
hahaha well done briedog my husband colours my hair every few weeks.

Well done hun.
- By Isabel Date 23.05.06 21:56 UTC
They will be getting at least the lower figure as that is the minimum wage for a 40 hour week.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 23.05.06 21:59 UTC
Yes and you try bringing up a family on that low crappy wage it doesnt equate tips at xmas mean alot to the refuse men and can mean a good xmas for their kids or not.
- By Isabel Date 23.05.06 22:05 UTC
Then lobby your MP to do something to increase the minimum wage if you feel like that.  Relying on peoples charity should not be necessary in this day and age.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 23.05.06 22:13 UTC
What on earth is the mp going to do? they cant even moan to the union as the rep may lose his perks/privilages its not black and white.
- By Isabel Date 23.05.06 22:20 UTC
It is not the unions that determine minimum wages it is Parliament. I have no idea what perks/privalages you think union reps get.
No it is not black and white, if enough people feel like you do and lobby their MP he will get the message but we live in a democracy and many of his constituants may feel as I do that the current minimum wage is appropriate to enable business and councils to run within their necessary budgets.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 23.05.06 22:29 UTC
Isabel i understand what you mean but it just isnt practical, for arguments sake my ex is a wagon driver his union rep is on the switchboard, now if my ex had a problem they will do their upmost to stop the issue getting out of hand as they will be on the dustcarts (true).
Its sooo easy to replace a refuse person and would you speak up for fear of your job? no neither would i.
The refuse depos are out to tender frequently/yearly which makes me laugh whoever provides the cheapest quote gets the job and they are not always the best we are lucky that our refuse hasnt been tendered out yet.
- By Isabel Date 23.05.06 22:36 UTC
As I said it is not the unions that determine the minimum wage.  You can lobby your MP about it without reference to anybodies union or employer.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.05.06 22:07 UTC
Other jobs without tips pay a lot less than £10,000 a year!
- By briedog [gb] Date 24.05.06 06:19 UTC
yes like life guards. do not get pay alot a year but they are there to safe  life.s plus they have to pay for their on going coures to keep them in a job.

and when they do safe a life they may get a thank you or sued if the person as any injurys which the person put a opond them elis in the first place bye get them self into a sitution to have a life guard to safe them.

£5.00 a hour to take  repondablety
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.05.06 21:57 UTC
I was chatting to the refuse man who was emptying the dog-poo bin as I arrived with my 'contribution', and I sympathised that it can't be a very nice job. He told me it pays £14,000 a year, and that he's happy with that.
- By HuskyGal Date 23.05.06 22:31 UTC
hahahahaaha..how Bizare?????
I thought it was only Americans that told you how much they earnt in their second sentence... (sorry Lori!!! Sweeping generalisation I Know (Not short of those in this thread are we ),But I know that you'll know my tongue is my cheek and meant with a affable humour ;)
- By Missie Date 23.05.06 23:42 UTC
Ok. To the OP.
So some of us tip, some of us don't.
Some of us get tips, some of us don't.
Some of us tip everybody, some of us tip nobody.
Some expect tips, some don't.
If you want to tip, go ahead. If you don't, then don't ;)
:P
- By calmstorm Date 24.05.06 04:56 UTC
Its up to anyone who they tip and why, and if youre happy with the bin men then tip them, same with postie, hairdresser, whoever. think really its just down to personal choice.

As to those that have to buy their equipment for work, it may not be much but they can, if they keep receipts, claim back some of this money from the tax man every year. Every little helps..............;)
- By Lori Date 24.05.06 15:04 UTC
Second! Oh no, we have to tell you about all our failed love affairs and current problems first. goes searching for dirt on Norwegians

I know Annie ns, I had no idea it was such a contentious question here! You'd have thought I'd asked what they should eat (ooh, ducks from the lob thrown by admin for fueling the fire) :-D
- By dgibbo [be] Date 24.05.06 06:43 UTC
I ALWAYS tip the hairdresser and the girl that washes my hair and gets me a coffee.  My husband is a london taxI driver and he doesn't always get tipped, sometimes people say keep the change, which may be 5p, 10p, 20p etc.  I wouldn't dream of giving my hairdresser 20p!!!  But as people say we shouldn't expect a tip.
- By tohme Date 24.05.06 16:16 UTC
I never tip the hairdresser, God Forbid.......and he is the owner.  In the 7 years I have been at the salon I have only tipped twice when two people gave me exceptional shampoos.

I do not believe in tipping in this day and age in particular when there is a minimum wage.  I do not get tipped in my job, if you do your job well you are still employed, if you do not, then you should shape up or ship out.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Scrooge :D
