Brees' condition had deteriorated rapidly over the last couple of weeks now, she can often only get up with assisstance, and then more often than not falls over :( When she does get on her feet she totters around in circles, and has become quite incontinent. It seems to us, she has no quality of life left........so after a long weekend, we have arranged for the Vet to come here at 3pm this afternoon :(
I thought I had thought all of this thru, but perhaps someone could advise me as to how to deal with our other dog libby.
Should she be in the same room when the procedure is administered?
Should we let her see Bree after she has 'gone'?
Is there anything we can do to make the whole thing as stressfree as possible for Bree.........and also libby, who has always had Bree around?

Oh libs, I'm so terribly sorry. :( :(
Personally I wouldn't have libby in the room when Bree is helped on - you'll be very emotional which could worry her. Let libby come in afterwards. What I do with mine, hoping to make their journey as easy as possible, is cuddle them and stroke them and talk to them the whole time, telling them what good dogs they've been, and how happy I am that we could share our lives, and silly stuff about "I remember when you were a little puppy and you did xyz", not stopping talking and stroking and soothing till I know they're away. Then the tears really flow.
I'll be thinking of you all this afternoon. {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}
No advice I'm afraid, but just want you to know that I will also be thinking of you.
Such an agonising to decision to make and I really feel for you
Big hugs

I am so sorry - it is such a hard thing to have to do, even when you know it is the only thing to do.
My breed are very greedy so I have some delicious treats to give them when the vet is doing their bit. I have found that this distracts them and also me and helps to make the process go more smoothly. And I agree with Jeangenie about keeping Libby out of the room while the deed is done. Let her in once the vet has gone.
I'll be thinking of you too.
JG, thats exactly what I do when holding my babies (a few now over the years) when they have to leave. try and make them think this is no more than any other medical thing Iv held them for over the years. Hold them and tell them i love them. keep talking all the while they are going under, and as they fall asleep i tell them nite nite. Its just me and the vet. When its all over, and iv regained some composure, I let the others (if there are any) say their last respects. I belive they need to know, or they will be forever looking for the one thats gone.
I let my kids say nite nite and have a hug and a kiss before (if its a planned passing, not all are) but they are not there when it happens. I let them see the dog, and have a cuddle and say goodbye, before we put them to rest in the ground. The dogs live as family, and they go as family. And its the most heartbreaking thing, and I really really feel for the Op, Im crying now, because I remember what its like, and i really really sympathise.
So, Im sending a warm embrace, and much love, and will be thinking of you.

So sorry and will be no comfort now, but how fortunate that we are able to help our pets in this way when the joy has gone from their lives.
Very sad, thinking of you, it's what we all dread.

I've had 3 dogs pts at home. each time I've let the other animals come in and say their goodbyes after. Must admit none of the dogs have seemed bothered my Siamese reacted most when I had one of my Boxers pts.

Oh Libs, I really feel for you... this is the most heartbreaking decision I think we ever have to make....
I would allow Libby to say goodbye to Bree after she has slipped over to the Bridge. The journey is a personal and precious one not to be shared..
I made a big mistake in not allowing Summer say goodbye to Ellie (she began her journey while at the vets) and Summer has been in mourning ever since...a very changed girl :(
Will be thinking of you and Bree this afternoon...

Libby - I can only repeat what everyone else has said - you know that we've been there too. I cuddled Purdey, and as the needle slipped in, I told her "off you go" - which was always her signal for a good run. Afterwards, I let all the others come in to say goodbye - Thor and Gypsy sniffed and kissed her.
Its a hard road we go down, when we love our dogs. {{{{hugs and tears}}}}

A very sad day. Hopefully it will be a long time before I am faced with that day, but people generally seem to advise letting other animals say goodbye, then they know what has happened and won't keep looking for the one that has gone. Hugs for all of you. :-(

Just noticed the time (3.10). Hope you are OK, Liberty.
xx

The two I lost in last few months the first was taken to the VET to PTS so they didn't see her, and the other died in the same room with the rest, and to be honest I don't think it made a difference to the ones left behind, other than them being confused at their dead relative not moving or reacting.

thinking of you at this time.i know what you are going to though so if you want a chat please give me a call.
regards
terri

Oh Liberty I have only just read this. My heart is aching for you. What a wonderful way for her to pass to the bridge, in her own home with her loved ones with her. When you have seen your babies suffering it is a relief once the pain has subsided that they are no longer in pain and are at last free. You made the brave decision to let her suffering end and I admire you it is one of the hardest decisions we have to make. I hope you soon find comfort in the memories you have. I am thinking of you.
