Topic Dog Boards / Showing / 'stripping' a working sheltie
- By amry45 [gb] Date 15.05.06 08:32 UTC
I have an outsize working Sheltie with a dense undercoat.  Can he be 'stripped' or is this not advisable with this breed?

Don't know an awful lot about Shelties (hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly!), but mine (BSD) is going through problems in the show ring just now, so could be going over to working trials.  If he does, I will be totally stripping out the undercoat to make it more comfy for him to work as he suffers from the heat.

Good luck,
Sarah.

You could try using a shedding comb on his coat, this will take out the undercoat and leave top coat.  :) :)

I've stripped the undercoat out on an overcoated pet sheltie and also used a Coat King as he was neutered and didn't drop any coat at all (Dog looked like a huge pile of hair walking about :( )  he seemed much cooler and the coat was much easier to cope with after but needed doing on a 4 monthly basis.  As he had SOOO much coat he looked much better afterwards - like a real Sheltie :D :D

A friend of mine is looking for a Sheltie pup (bitch) for a pet home.  It would be just as a pet and not used to show/breed.  Does anyone have any information they could pass on.

Many thanks

Best bet is to contact one of the Shetland Sheepdog clubs, they can give info on available pups and/or responsible breeders.   Just because someone breeds for show doesn't mean they won't have very well bred pet pups for sale :)
But be prepared to wait as they may not have pups waiting :)

Hope this helps

Many thanks for your reply.  We have already tried the Kennel Club but there are no adverts for this breed on there.  I've printed a list of breeders for her to ring.  She doesn't mind waiting!

LOL :D

The Kennel club don't allow advertising by breeders on their website as far as I know ;)

If you go onto the website and click on BREED STANDARDS, then Pastoral, then Shetland  Sheepdog and scroll down to the bottom of the page there is a list of breed clubs and the contact numbers.  These people are the best ones to help you locate a healthy pup which has been raised and socialised properly :D

There are 5 litters of Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) puppies on the Kennel Club Puppy sales list right now.

Just a tip, some of the best breeders don't bother advertising on the Kennel Club Puppy Register, prefering to take enquiries through their breed clubs and are likely to already ahve a waiting list.

The Kennel club will take adverts from anyoen with a KC litter, membership of a breed club usually means a deeper involvement in the breed, and I woudl always advise checking a breeder out through a breed club.  the breed club will have a code of breedign ethics,a dn you can then check that the breeder breeds accoridng to it's priciples.

For shelties eye testing as puppies and later as adults for various eye problems would be a minimum requirement.  These codes also set out best practice re age of homing and breeder responsibilites, so gives you soem reasurance when buying.

I only said that because Reesy said there were no adverts for Shelties on the KC website, at which, Dill laughed out loud saying the KC didn't allow adverts. I feel my info was simply, clarification.

I will add though that in both of my breeds, it is perfectly acceptable to use the KC puppy sales list.

Silly me, believing that because there is no obvious area on the KC website that adverts weren't there - I shall wear my sack cloth and ashes with pride.  A puppy list was I believed just that, a list of people who had puppies (which I recieved many years ago ) not actual adverts like epupz or similar.

I still say the best place to find a pup is the breed clubs, many breeders don't ever need to advertise because of them ;)

Never said it wasn't just that many breeders do not bother with it, and sometimes puppy buyers assume that the KC list is the list of all KC litters. :D

Whereas many of the best litters may not be advertised at all, especially if the breeder has most of theirs booked in advance as by the time the liosting appears the pups may already al be spoken for.
