Hi,
I went to a dog class last night and they were talking about the importance of cleaning your dogs teeth. Sorry if I sound ignorant but I had never even considered this before. He does has different textured toys to chew and so I thought this would be ok. Does anybody clean there dogs teeth on a regular basis? thanks Lauren.
Hi Lauren,
I clean both my dogs teeth every night (as you're meant to do it daily). And to be honest, since I have been brushing my dogs teeth I have noticed a great improvement. There is alot less tartar and plaque. Even though my dogs commonly had textured toys and marrow bones I didn't realise how much difference brushing their teeth make!

I used to clean my dogs teeth when they were fed commercial dog food. Now that they are fed raw there is no need as they do not consume grain and therefore there is no plaque produced. Raw bones and meat and veg keep their pearlies so white that even the anti raw vet comments on them.

Yes, I do my lot's teeth 3 or 4 times a week.

Yes I clean it once or twice a week. I check them every day but only clean it when I feel it's time to do so.......
Hi, I give my dogs a blob of Logic Oral gel everyday - there's no need to brush with this. Just put it on their gums or on a piece of food.

Nope, and the ones that have passed on still had great teeth to theri dying day.
The Vet used to comment on how good Elka's teeth were right up to 12 years of age, though they continued to be good after that.
Mine have always had bones to chew.
I had never realised how bad soem dogs teeth can be until I looked into the mouth of one of my daughter's friends Border collies who was 2 1/2, and they were absolutely terrible.

My Toothbrush.
I do occasionally clean my dogs teeth as they lover it LOL - normally before shows etc when I also get the tooth scraper out if there is any stubborn plaque but that doesn't happen very often as they have bones etc to chew and have great teeth :D

Nope never have had to and all my girls have had excellent teeth :)
I've never cleaned any of my dog's teeth; previously my dogs had smoked bones but the ones you used to be able to get before BSE still had marrow in them and the dogs worked hard to get it out :)
I haven't been able to find these for ages but bones (should be raw for safety) I think are best.
Does the dog toothpaste really work well?
There's also that Plaque Off - meant to be very good :)

They still sell the smoked bones in Countrywide :) I have two half chewed ones the girls have given up on if you want them :D
:P are they the ones with marrow in? I can find the smoked ones (shanks i think?) but they don't have anything in them seemingly any more.
Maybe the ones you've found are really old ... :P :P

Nope, never and don't feed raw or bones either. Still, her teeth are remarkably clean and white for a 13 year old. I think chewing on sticks (doesn't swallow, I watch, just likes to crunch them up and spit most out) and eating hard veggies like carrots and beets might help. Plus, I put oxyfresh in her drinking water. Probably some dogs though, like some people, are just lucky and don't build up a lot of plaque.
I'm actually afraid to brush her teeth. I have brushed too vigorously on my own teeth and have abraded my gums in places to the point where they are completely worn away. I have had a rather unpleasant surgery to fix this. Is this a concern or experience with any of you who do brush your dog's teeth?

I'm currently using Logic Gel on mine - this isn't applied with a brush, just smeared onto the gum and teeth with my finger :) I've also just started a trial with Plaque Off as my older one was starting to get a build up on the large molars - they've always eaten raw chicken wings and had raw veggies though so I think in the main that has kept their teeth clean.
Certainly most of the cleanest teeth I've seen are on dogs fed raw - many a golden oldie with REALLY pearly whites :) That said I'm not confident enough to go wholly down the BARF route (yet!) and also some dogs seem to be predisposed to having better enamel on their teeth than others.
regards, Teri :)
all of mine line up for their teeth to be cleaned everyday, we have just managed to stop the bull terrier from chewing his tooth brush though

Nope, I've used Plaqueoff a couple of times, brushed their teeth about 4 times in their lives and give them bones. Lydia my almost 13 year old has had her teeth brushed about 4 times in her life and they are still lovely and white and she still has all of her teeth!
I have tried to clean my dogs teeth but he doesn't seem to quite know what to do, so i just end up giving up. The plaqueoff sounds like a great idea, good for us anyway as tyler doesn't mind people putting there fingers in his mouth, but doesn't seem to impressed with a toothbrush.

No never they have a big raw marrow bone every week.

I dont, but only because I've never got round to it and would forget most of the time anyway, he gets raw bones and his teeth look good to me.
