Topic Dog Boards / Health / Exposed to kennel cough

Two of Max's litter sisters have developed kennel cough, after they were in kennels I collected them for their owner who was going to be too late coming back from holiday to collect them herself.  They were all playing together for about 6 hours and so Max and Molly will have been exposed to the kennel cough.  I understand it takes about 3-7 days for signs to show.  Is there anything I can do to help prevent them from coming down with it or is it just a case of wait and see?  We're all off on holiday to the Lake District in 9 days time and it would be awful for them to be poorly!!

I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent it only relieve the symptoms if they occur.  Paediatric Benyln is very soothing.  If it appears to be developing into a chest infection you will need antibiotics from the vet but please keep them in the car until speaking to the vet who will either examine them in the car or instruct you how they can access the surgery without risking other dogs.  You need to keep them well away from any other dogs for this, possible, incubation period and for 2 weeks after the last clinical symptoms if they do develop it, any very young or elderly dogs can be seriously affected.

if you do buy the red benylin please buy the non-drowsy one as i once bought my dog the drowsy one thinking she would sleep and have her cough soothed but it gave her an upset stomach although she is fine on the non-drowsy.

This would be a time I would use homeopathic nosodes.  If you give Ainsworths a call in the morning & explain, they'll have them to you by the next day (Sat)

Fingers crossed your pups will be ok :)
