- By Sarah Pior [gb] Date 09.05.06 12:38 UTC
Hello

I have two bulldogs aged 11 months they are both on pedigree chum puppy at the moment, but I want to change them onto adult.  I dont no wheather to continue with Adult Pedigree chum or try something different, I have been looking at Bakers and Supa-dog.

Can anyone tell me what they feed their adult bulldog.

What does their breeder recommend?  Presumably you rather liked the look of her adult dogs :)

Ooooo there's so many to choose from! If they do well on Pedigree (i.e. they enjoy their food, are happy, healthy & active pups who 'produce' firm poo's) then give them a try on the adult version - wean them over a period of about 14 days   Supadog do a very good food for 'sensitive tums' but your pups probably won't need that.  Do your pups have moist or dry or a mixture of both?  What did the pups breeder feed his/her adult Bullies on cos as Isabel said if they were 'good examples of the breed' then thats a good thing to go by :)

Please dont feed bakers or pedigree, they are not suitable to feed dogs on long term in my opinion. Can i ask why you were thinking of trying Bakers? Is it because of the preeuuutty colours? ;)

The Breeder, feeds her dogs mince, tripe, not dog food.  She dosen't like it.  But I cant afford that for two dogs everyday.

Yes I did think of Bakers because, it looked more interesting.  I have been on another website and asked a breeder there and she feeds her dogs Superdog.  So I think I'll try that.

Thanks.

Tripe and raw meat is very cheep when purchased from the right place. Please look into it carefully and buy a decent food because of it's content and not because of what it looks like.

Of course Bakers and Pedigree are suitable to be fed long term that is exactly what they are formulated to do.

If this is the one you're talking about: http://www.pedigree.com/Splash/default.asp then unfortunately I have to say that this is one the worst dog foods out there. I'd go for Canidae or Innova (but you don't get them in UK) or Arden Grange. You can also try Royal Canin for specific breed.....

You have to bear in mind the fact that the OP has 2 pups to feed, therefore, the high priced foods may be out of pocket for them.  Good complete dry foods (IMO) at 'reasonable cost' include Chappie, Beta, SupaDog, Pets at Home's own make and James Wellbeloved (JWB is going to be in the supermarkets relatively soon so will have to come down so as to be "competively priced").  I still say if a dog does well on Pedigree or Bakers then why change!!  Anyway, Sarah Pior, hope this helps :)

Perhaps because it's bad in the long run..... Pedigree contains way too much salt which can cause kidney failure!!! http://www.pets.ca/forum/printthread.php?t=7215
If I can't afford the best and healthiest food for my dogs I'd rather not have them at all.......
- By Isabel Date 10.05.06 17:34 UTC
I suppose that is a worry if you live in Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia or Vietnam but in the UK dog food is regulated I expect it would be in Australia too.  The levels of salt used would cause no harm at all.  Pedigree is a very popular food if it was dangerous to health we would see large numbers of animals affected and it would certainly be reflected in studies which currently show the dog population to be as healthy as it has ever been.

Well I'd never promote it anyway. Specially not on a reputable dog forum like this. If it was a really good dog food it would be sold by Vets as well. I think when it comes to dog food it's like with human food.....quality costs money and I'd never buy anything but the best for my furry friends. ;) In my country and most other central European countries Pedigree, Chappy are considered "junk food". YES it is popular, but because it's sold in grocery stores and on petrol stations, but that doesn't mean it's good! Special pet stores and Vet offices sell food like Canidae, Innova, AG, Hill's, Nutro and so on. They are a bit more costly, but don't we all love to spend when it comes to our dogs? ;)
Don't mention this food on our national dog forum, people will bite your head off :( ....
- By Isabel Date 10.05.06 17:59 UTC
I did not say its popularity demonstrated it is good, McDonalds are popular :)  but the fact that it is very popular within a population that is demonstrably well demonstrates it is good.
In the UK selling by vets is not seen as a particular recommendation just a convenience.  Quality does not have to cost money, peas, brisket and apples are considerably cheaper than asparagus, rump and mangoes but the man who dines on the later will be no healthier than the man who dines on the former :)
Foods are formulated differently in different countries but in the UK these are not consider junk foods in fact Chappie, in partiuclar, has a dedicated following as a Search on Champdogs would show :)

We have our fanatics here too :D

Actually Chappie over here is recommended by vets for dogs with sensitive digestion - it's recognised as a good-quality, wallet-friendly food that's stood the test of time. Not 'junk food' by any means - the canine equivalent of cottage pie, carrots and greens rather than duck a l'orange! :)

Also Hill's has a shocking reputation over here with the feeding obsessives! ;)

Thanks Peewee.

I just want to confrim that I give both my dogs everyhthing that they need. I can afford whats best for them, I just wanted advice on what other peolpe feed their dogs. If I couldn't afford them I wouldn't have paid £2000 each for them.

Thanks Sarah.

If you are looking for something that's fairly natural in ingredients, a complete food and reasonably priced may I recommend you have a look at Laughing Dog complete.  I recently bought a 3kg bag to try my old girl out on and she loved it, it doesn't have a high enough fat content for me to feed it to my younger dogs but I certainly thought the ingredients looked good - and no beet pulp! http://www.ld7.co.uk/press7.html

Pleasure   And I didn't doubt that you couldn't afford to feed them the best :)  You do right asking for advice though cos a lot of the highly priced foods are no better than many of the mid-price range foods   Personally for my dog I feed Burns & James Wellbeloved mixed together and Arden Grange and Natures:Menu treats but thats only cos she's got a sensitive tum and a lot of others that I've tried have upset it no end.  At the end of the day the food that suits your dogs - whether it be the same food for each or two different foods - is what you should feed IMO :)
