Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ticks ticks and more ticks

Well last week I took Molly to teh vets about the wax in her ears and when the vet was fiddling with her ears he spotted a tick which he removed. Went home and a few hours later found one on Freya. Sorted that with some vasaline and then the tick remover. The following day discovered another one on Molly and removed it. Yesterday when towelling Molly off after the walk one dropped on the floor. I promptly burnt it!!!! :eek:These were all rather large and greyish in colour. Today whilst brushing Mollys ears found a small tick which I think might have been a brown tick. Removed and the found one near her eye when she was having a bath. What is going on???? We use frontline combo on them and it was only 3 weeks since the last dose when they got the first tick. Any tips as in the 3 years of owning dogs this has never happened but there now seems to be a breakout in our local area. I'm going to frontline them tonight and hopefully this will kill the tick I don't want to mess with it as it is close to the eye. Another porblem is that Mollys coat is so thick they are really hard to find. Poor girl.

there must be a breakout of ticks all over, I pick at least 6 ticks per day off my two dogs and one of my cats (the other one doesnt seem to pick them up).  Took my boys to watch me play in a netball tournament today and a huge full up tick fell off one of them :o and then when a friend was stroking them she found another two  cats just come in and ive pulled one off her - I just flush them down the toilet

Mine are all frontlined but I dont think frontline kills recurrent ticks, only the ones already on there.  Im going to try garlic with my lot, but to be fair I think it is where they are excercised, they run through the barley in the back field and up through the woods where there are loads of deer, I think its just a case of being vigilant and checking through them each day.

Those green "o tom" tick hooks are the best, I couldnt be without mine :p

Hmmm, I've got 2 Newfies and have never ever had ONE tick on them at all!!! I give them a squirt of Garlic Paste on their dinner, I believe this also prevents them getting fleas as they never have them either! Might be worth a try?? Certainly better than spraying them with chemicals? We do go to the Country Park every single day too...but still never get anything! All the best, Dawn

well im going to give the garlic a go, not sure if the cats will eat it though

Well the vet said that frontline combo would kill any ticks that went on her but the one is still there. I'm going to give it til tomorrow as the packet said within 48 hours. Think I'll also add some garlic. How much is ok for them???

I give my crew a odourless garlic tablet with their food every day and we have never had Tick or Fleas

I buy the Garlic paste for cooking and squirt about a teaspoon of it on their evening meal....I have Giants though and some would say that Garlic CAN be a problem for dogs as it part of the Onion family and Onions are poisinous for dogs! But you only need a wee bit for it to have effect! All the best, Dawn X

hi mollymoto,

we found the frontline combo was pretty crap.  we have gone back to using the normal frontline which for us, has always been good.  it doesnt stop them getting ticks but it does kill them quick in our experience.

the good news is that its now available without prescription to buy online!!!!! woo hoo!!!! my vet charges a flamin fortune for it! ( i dont like asking for a prescription)

We never had a tick problem, until we moved to a different area.  On our first walk our dog Josie got several ticks, I also got one, in my neck, I'm cringing as i'm writting.  Anyway we put up with them, by removing them for a few days, then went to the vets.  They gave us something just for ticks (sorry can't remember the name) it works the same way as frontline and you apply it along the back.  It works really well, we start using it in the spring, when they appear again and never have a problem, just re apply every couple of months( it lasts longer than the packet says).  If you want to know the name of it I can ring my vet.

Well we had to reapply the frontline only 4 weeks after the last lot. The same day we did this we found a small tick on her ear and removed it and then a smalll one about an inch from her eye. The frontline says it kills them wihtin 48 hours so we waited the 48 hours and the bugger just kept growing. Took her to  the vets and he says it only kills small ticks :confused: yet it was small at the start. I'm just so annoyed at the manufacturers as its blatently not doin what the packet says. I'm going to get some garlic tablets for the girls. Do you use human ones or specific ones for dogs. About to take the girls out and then have the tick patrol on return!!  The downside is Molly is becoming v timid and won't let me groom her. Poor thing

I use human ones from Holland and Barrett :)

Mollymoto - I use Advantix which is supposed to be better than Frontline but it's not as easily available and many vets don't stock it routinely.  It deals with both ticks and fleas.  I actually order mine online from the US!
