Hi everyone,
I am looking for some info on inbreeding, a friend is thinking of buying a GSD pup who is the result of a mating between a mother and son? I know nothing about breeding but she has asked me if the close relationship means additional faults?
Anyone who can provide some info and/or questions for her to ask the breeder I would be very grateful
Thanks

It depends on many things. Is the Mother's pedigree close or an outcross? And what faults as well as virtues are the dogs in the pedigree carrying, because breeding Mother to son will amplify both bad and good genes. Knowing, really knowing the dogs involved for many generations behind both sire and dam is most important before considering this sort of mating. Having said that, if the ancestors carry no MAJOR faults, then this mating can certainly produce quality pups. But knowledge is everything!

Why not ask the breeder why they chose to breed so close in this case - if they had thought it through well they should be happy to tell you, and even if you don't follow the line of thinking you will know that at least thinking did go into the mating. Jackie

Or maybe it was an acident, as they kept a dog an thought it wouldn't mate it's Mum! There are truly people out there who think animals have human morals!
I would want to be 100% sure that both parents have temperaments above reproach. Not the slightest sign of nervousness or agression or over dominance, as all traits psossed by the parents are likely to be amplified. Do they both have good Hip Scores. I think you said they are GSD, so do either have Colitis (digestive problems) as theseare quite common among GSD.
Is the pedigree of the parent (mother and son) already closely bred behind them? By this I mean do the same dogs appear more than once in the four generations behind each parent (obviously they will appear twicve at least in the puppies pedigrees).

Have a look at the post further down, “Why breed and in-breed”. There can be good reasons for doing this but I would want to know a lot more before I would take a puppy on.

I think that they need to find out wether the mating was accidental or if done on purpose. If it falls into the second scenario they they need to be asking why the breeder chose such a mating. If accidental then I would probably stay well clear.

If it is an accidental mating I would leave well alone. If it is a "Test" mating then I would not expect to pay, knowing that there could be big vets bills if the test is a disaster. If it is a planned mating then I would want to know the thinking behind the mating. This kind of mating could be fraught so I would only go with a breeder I had faith in.
